Development Engineer – Electronics & Embedded Systems | Industry-Leading Benefits
We're working with a specialist technology manufacturer developing life-saving devices used around the world.
The technology plays a vital role in helping protect people, property and critical infrastructure, giving engineers the opportunity to work on products where what you do genuinely matters.
We're looking for a Development Engineer to join the Cambridge engineering team.
This is a broad and varied product development role combining electronics, embedded systems, software, testing and technical problem solving.
You’ll have the opportunity to work across both New Product Development and Sustaining Engineering, helping develop new technologies while also improving and supporting products already in the field.
If you’re naturally curious about how electronic devices work, enjoy getting hands‑on with hardware and like solving technical problems that aren’t always straightforward, this could be a great opportunity.
What you’ll be doing
- Contribute to the design, development and support of electronics and embedded systems throughout the product lifecycle
- Work across both New Product Development and Sustaining Engineering
- Investigate technical issues, identify improvements and support verification activities
- Interpret schematics, datasheets and technical documentation
- Carry out prototyping, bench testing, fault finding and root-cause analysis
- Investigate unusual product or system behaviour and develop practical solutions
- Use Python or MATLAB for engineering analysis, data processing and/or test automation
- Collect, analyse and interpret technical data to support engineering decisions
- Produce clear technical records, investigation summaries and reports
- Work closely with development and production engineering teams
- Take ownership of technical challenges and see investigations through to resolution
- Support colleagues across the wider engineering team where required
What we’re looking for
We’re deliberately keeping the brief broad because the right person could come from a number of engineering backgrounds.
You might have experience in electronics, embedded systems, software, physics or wider product development.
What matters most is your practical engineering experience, technical curiosity and ability to investigate problems and develop solutions.
- Practical experience in electronics, embedded systems or product development
- Familiarity with schematics, datasheets, circuit layout, prototyping and bench testing
- Experience using Python or MATLAB for engineering analysis, data processing or test automation
- A proactive approach to problem solving and technical investigation
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- The ability to take ownership of technical challenges
- Clear communication and a collaborative approach to engineering
It would be great if you also have:
- An interest or experience in sensing, measurement and/or optical technologies
- Experience supporting products through development, verification, production or sustaining phases
- Experience with tools such as JIRA, Confluence or similar
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary product development environment
A degree in Electronics Engineering, Physics, Software Engineering, Embedded Systems or a related discipline is required.
This is more than an opportunity to develop another electronic product.
You’ll be working on life-saving technology with a genuine real-world purpose, where your engineering work contributes to protecting people and property.
You’ll also have the opportunity to work across different areas of engineering rather than being restricted to a single discipline. Whether your strengths lie in electronics, embedded software, testing, data analysis or hands-on product development, there’s scope to contribute and develop your skills.
The engineering culture encourages curiosity, creativity and practical problem solving, with engineers given the opportunity to investigate issues, develop ideas and take ownership of their work.
What’s on offer?
- Company bonus scheme
- Pension with employer contributions of up to 10.5%
- Private BUPA health insurance, with the option to extend cover to your spouse and/or children
- Employee Assistance Programme and wellbeing support
- 25 days' annual leave
- Friday working from home
- Cycle to Work scheme
- Electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme
- Company share scheme, subject to eligibility
- Regular team events and employee recognition initiatives
- Employee discounts and lifestyle benefits
