Want to do more than just produce drawings?
We're working with an established British precision engineering manufacturer that is growing its New Product Development (NPD) team and is looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join them permanently.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an engineer who enjoys taking ownership of designs, solving real engineering problems and seeing their work progress from an initial concept through to a finished, manufactured product.
You’ll be working on precision, high-speed rotating machinery, collaborating closely with manufacturing and other engineering disciplines to develop products where accuracy, reliability and practical engineering really matter.
You’ll have genuine involvement across the engineering lifecycle, including:
- Developing mechanical concepts and turning them into detailed 3D CAD designs
- Designing precision components, mechanisms and assemblies
- Working with close-tolerance bores, shafts, seals, bearings and other precision components
- Developing and maintaining technical documentation
- Supporting NPD projects from initial concept through to manufacture
- Working closely with manufacturing to make sure designs can actually be produced efficiently
- Troubleshooting design and manufacturing challenges
- Reviewing and improving existing designs
- Supporting continuous product and process improvements
- Working collaboratively with other engineers and departments to deliver projects
This isn't a role where you'll simply be handed a drawing and asked to model it.
You’ll have the opportunity to contribute ideas, influence designs and see your engineering work become a physical product.
We're looking for a strong Mechanical Design Engineer with good fundamentals, solid CAD experience and a practical approach to engineering.
Ideally, you'll have around 5+ years' mechanical design experience, although the right combination of experience, technical ability and attitude is more important than a specific number of years.
You might come from a background in:
- Rotating equipment
- Fluid power
- Pneumatics or hydraulics
- Pumps, compressors or gearboxes
- Process equipment
- Manufacturing / machinery
- Aerospace
- Automotive
- Other highly engineered products
The important thing is that you're a capable mechanical designer who understands how things are designed, manufactured and assembled.
Strong 3D CAD experience is important.
Solid Edge is preferred, but experience with other professional CAD packages will be considered — including:
- SolidWorks
- Creo
- Other comparable 3D CAD systems
Experience producing detailed engineering drawings, working with tolerances/GD&T and designing for manufacture will be highly relevant.
If you’ve worked across concept → CAD → drawing → prototype → production, your experience could translate particularly well.
You don’t need experience in everything below.
However, experience with any of these areas would be particularly interesting:
- Vane, gear or piston actuators
- Cylinders, dampers and dashpots
- Hydraulic or pneumatic mechanisms
Valve Automation / Process Control
- Butterfly valve actuators
- Positioners and limit switches
- Spring-return / fail-safe mechanisms
- Process control equipment
Precision Rotary & Sealing Engineering
- Close-tolerance bores
- Seals and bearing arrangements
- Precision assemblies
- Pumps, compressors, gearboxes or small motors
Manufacturing
- CNC machining
- Injection moulding
- Fabrication
- Prototyping
- Tooling
- Design for Manufacture / DFM
This is a role for someone who wants to be close to the engineering.
You’ll be working on products where the detail matters — tolerances, materials, manufacturing methods, assembly, performance and reliability.
You’ll also have the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers and manufacturing teams rather than operating in a silo.
If you’ve previously worked in a multidisciplinary environment, led projects, worked directly with manufacturing or taken products from concept → CAD → drawing → prototype → production, that’s exactly the kind of experience we’d like to hear about.
Up to £57,500 salary DOE
You could be an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer looking for your next step.
Perhaps you’re currently working in:
Aerospace or equivalent Precision Engineering industry
Medical Devices/ Safety critical is beneficial → NPD
Or you simply have several years of solid mechanical design experience and want the opportunity to work on more interesting, highly engineered products.
You don't need to tick every box.
If you’ve got strong mechanical design fundamentals, professional CAD experience and a genuine interest in how products are designed and manufactured, we’d be keen to have a conversation.
