We are looking for a practical, hands-on Mobile App Developer to take ownership of our native mobile estate and lead the evolution of our mobile-first product strategy. This is not a “quiet life” front-end role. You will be our primary permanent mobile specialist in a small, fast-moving team of mainly Python engineers. You’ll be highly visible, trusted with real ownership, and expected to make decisions that directly shape our product direction.
The Role
- Your first priorities will be:
- Maintaining and enhancing our existing Android app
- Building and launching the equivalent functionality as an iOS app
- Following this, you will:
- Help redesign and modernise the web front end of our existing product
- Contribute to the planning and technical design of our next mobile-first product, which will likely also require a supporting web application
This role blends hands-on development, product thinking, and collaboration with stakeholders. You’ll work closely with backend engineers, product leadership, and occasionally clients to ensure our tools are intuitive, high-performing, and genuinely useful. Your work will have visible impact across advice-giving organisations and the wider public and third sector in the UK.
Key Responsibilities
- Mobile App Development (Primary Focus)
- Maintain, refactor and enhance our existing Android application, including design of user experience within the app.
- Design and develop our new iOS app, mirroring Android functionality across in a scalable and maintainable way.
- Improve app performance, reliability and usability.
- Contribute to architecture decisions for a mobile-first product ecosystem.
- Support CI/CD pipelines and manage releases for app stores.
- Web Front-End Development
- Redesign and modernise the web front end of our existing platform.
- Work with backend engineers to integrate APIs effectively.
- Establish and refine UI/UX best practices across mobile and web.
- Contribute to a cohesive cross-platform design system.
- Product & Delivery
- Participate in agile ceremonies and technical discussions.
- Contribute to architecture and tooling decisions.
- Support consultancy tenders and provide meaningful technical input where required.
- Occasionally engage with clients to understand use cases and solve problems.
About You
We’re looking for someone who is confident in mobile development and excited by ownership.
Essential
- Strong experience in Android development (React Native and Kotlin preferred).
- Experience building or maintaining iOS apps (React Native and Swift preferred) — or strong willingness to transition from Android to iOS.
- Solid understanding of mobile app architecture and lifecycle management.
- Experience integrating REST APIs.
- Familiarity with Git, CI/CD pipelines, Docker and modern DevOps practices.
- Experience with HTML, CSS and a modern web framework (e.g. React or similar).
- Comfortable working autonomously in a small, collaborative team.
- Strong problem-solving ability and a pragmatic mindset.
Desirable
- Experience with cross-platform approaches (e.g. React Native).
- UI/UX sensibility and ability to implement wireframes into production-ready interfaces.
- Experience contributing to consultancy bids or technical proposals.
- Exposure to backend technologies such as Python or Rust.
What Success Looks Like
Within your first 6–9 months, you will:
- Have stabilised and improved the Android app.
- Delivered a functional iOS version.
- Helped modernise the web front end.
- Contributed to the technical direction of our next mobile-first product.
