What You’ll Do

  • Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
  • Performs screening tests and reports results.
  • Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing.
  • Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing.
  • Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory.
  • Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens.
  • Makes the supervisor aware of unresolved orders.
  • Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs.
  • Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures, and safety practices.
  • Keeps the work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.
  • Maintains medical laboratory information system by identifying information needs and problems, recommends improvements, establishes priorities, tests, and always maintains security and confidentiality.
  • Assists with analysis and trending of occupational exposure incidents and information exchange.
  • Adheres to accreditation and compliance standard guidelines.
  • Assists in completing required reports, program reviews and preparation.
  • Utilizes good communication skills to maintain positive relationships with clients, co‑workers and other sections in the organization and with other facilities in the community.
  • Maintains a professional, organized and clean working environment by following organizational policies, guidelines, and safety standards.
  • Performs all assigned tasks in a professional manner to reflect the highest integrity of the Laboratory and WCHS.
  • Completes Work Assignments in a timely manner.
  • Always introduces self to patients, residents, families, and visitors when appropriate.
  • Reports safety hazards as appropriate.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

  • Previous experience or education in a health-related field helpful.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately enter, verify, and maintain patient information.
  • Excellent communication and customer‑service skills; able to explain processes clearly and respectfully.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism, empathy, and discretion.
  • Comfortable using computers and multiple systems; able to learn registration/EMR and phone systems.
  • Organized and dependable; able to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and complete assignments on time.
  • Team‑oriented with the ability to coordinate effectively across departments to support smooth patient flow.
  • Commitment to compliance, confidentiality (HIPAA), safety, and infection‑control standards.
  • Ability to work independently with normal supervision.

Physical Conditions

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Occasional after‑hours calls may occur.
  • Ability to move 30 to 40 pounds to stock supplies and move or support patients.
