Wynnstay is looking for a commercially focused and highly capable Commercial Manager – Fertiliser; this is a pivotal role in driving the performance, governance and operational coordination of Wynnstay’s fertiliser category across the Group. This position ensures the fertiliser portfolio delivers strong commercial returns while operating in full alignment with regulatory requirements, supply chain capability and the wider agricultural strategy. The Commercial Manager provides category ownership across buying, pricing strategy, margin delivery and risk management.
Working closely with Sales, Supply Chain, Finance and transport partners to ensure the business buys competitively, prices with confidence, manages market exposure effectively and delivers reliable supply and excellent outcomes for customers ensuring fertiliser remains a high-performing, compliant and strategically aligned part of Wynnstay’s agricultural offering. This is a hands-on, commercially driven leadership role requiring strong judgement in a fast moving and highly seasonal market. The successful candidate will balance strategic planning with practical operational problem solving, from managing supplier relationships and logistics challenges to supporting audits, maintaining governance standards and ensuring stock accuracy.
Responsibilities- Develop and execute the fertiliser category strategy aligned with Wynnstay’s Group commercial plan.
- Lead the fertiliser buying strategy, securing cost-effective procurement aligned to demand, margin and working capital objectives.
- Build and manage strategic supplier relationships, negotiating effectively to support supply reliability and commercial performance.
- Maintain disciplined pricing governance, balancing market competitiveness with margin protection.
- Monitor trading performance, market movements and price volatility, identifying risks and opportunities and acting decisively.
- Contribute to annual budgets, forecasts and in-year reforecasting, ensuring credible fertiliser demand planning.
- Coordinate closely with Supply Chain, operations and blending teams to ensure supply capability aligns with demand.
- Manage stock exposure, stock accuracy and working capital, ensuring effective fertiliser inventory management across the network.
- Oversee fertiliser administration, invoicing and order processing to ensure accurate financial and operational control.
- Coordinate with transport partners and internal logistics teams to ensure efficient, cost-effective product delivery and resolve delivery issues.
- Work with FIAS stores and operational teams to maintain appropriate stock levels and smooth product flow.
- Provide technical and commercial product expertise to support customers, the fertiliser desk and field sales teams.
- Support customer account activity, including pricing updates, finance applications and commercial discussions with key customers.
- Oversee technical services, including soil sampling, nutrient management planning and agronomic support.
- Support training, knowledge sharing and technical capability development, including encouraging relevant professional qualifications.
- Support seasonal campaigns, arable events and trial plots, recommending fertiliser and lime applications alongside field teams.
- Maintain strong category governance, including pricing controls, supplier agreements and margin oversight.
- Ensure compliance with FIAS standards, DGSA requirements and wider regulatory obligations, supporting audits and reviews.
- Promote and maintain a Health & Safety culture across all fertiliser operations.
- Proven experience in a buying, trading or product management role within a commodity or agriculturally linked environment.
- Strong commercial and financial acumen, including pricing strategy and margin management.
- Experience operating in volatile markets with seasonal demand patterns.
- Ability to influence and collaborate cross-functionally without direct authority.
- Experience within fertilisers, agriculture, Agri-inputs or related sectors.
- Exposure to multi-site or PLC environments.
