Electrical Design Engineer (Runcorn) - Β£50-55K Basic - Exclusive role
About the Role We are looking for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to design electrical systems for bespoke automated machinery, robotic systems and material handling solutions.
You will take designs from concept through to manufacture, installation and commissioning, working closely with mechanical, controls and software engineering teams.
The role would suit an electrical design engineer with experience in industrial automation, robotics, special-purpose machinery or material handling systems, who is confident using SolidWorks Electrical.
Key Responsibilities
β’ Design electrical control panels, machine wiring and electrical systems for automated machinery and robotic applications
β’ Produce detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and control panel designs using SolidWorks Electrical
β’ Develop electrical designs from initial concept through to detailed engineering and manufacturing
β’ Select and specify electrical components including drives, motors, sensors, safety devices, PLC hardware and control equipment
β’ Produce cable schedules, panel layouts, BOMs and electrical documentation
β’ Work closely with mechanical design engineers to integrate electrical and mechanical systems
β’ Collaborate with PLC/Controls Engineers to ensure electrical designs meet control system requirements
β’ Support the development of robotic and automated material handling systems
β’ Review customer specifications and translate requirements into practical electrical designs
β’ Assist with electrical calculations, component selection and system architecture
β’ Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers regarding electrical components and control panels
β’ Support factory acceptance testing, installation and commissioning activities where required
β’ Provide technical support during machine build, installation and commissioning β’ Ensure designs comply with relevant electrical safety standards and machinery regulations
β’ Maintain accurate technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle

β’ Automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS)
β’ AMR and AGV systems

β’ Special-purpose machinery
β’ Automated production equipment
β’ Machine vision systems
β’ Safety systems
β’ PLC and HMI-controlled machinery
Experience Required
β’ Previous experience as an Electrical Design Engineer within automation, robotics, machinery or a related industrial environment
β’ Strong experience producing electrical schematics and control system designs
β’ Practical experience using SolidWorks Electrical
β’ Understanding of industrial control panels and machine electrical systems
β’ Knowledge of motors, drives, sensors, safety circuits and industrial control equipment
β’ Ability to interpret technical specifications and develop designs accordingly
β’ Understanding of relevant electrical and machinery standards
β’ Good understanding of three-phase and single-phase industrial electrical systems
β’ Ability to work effectively alongside mechanical, controls and software engineering teams
Desirable Experience
β’ Experience with PLC-controlled automation
β’ Knowledge of Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley or similar control platforms
β’ Experience with robotics and automated material handling
β’ Experience designing electrical systems for conveyors, ASRS, AMRs or AGVs
β’ Knowledge of functional safety and machine safety systems
β’ Experience supporting machine commissioning and site installation
β’ Experience working on bespoke or engineered-to-order automation projects
