My client are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Controls Engineer to join their growing team. You will be part of a team of skilled engineers providing solutions for a multitude of manufacturing industries. The company, design, manufacture and install a wide range of complex automated systems using the very latest robotics, servo, PLC and vision systems combined with innovative design to deliver the full product life cycle.

TITLE: Controls Engineer

REPORTING TO: Engineering Manager

SALARY: £45 -60k + overtime rates available

CORE HOURS: 38 (8.00-3.00 Mon-Thu, 8.00-1.00 Fri) Flexible

HOLIDAYS: 25 + Public & Bank

THE ROLE

  • As controls engineer you will be working alongside mechanical and electrical design engineers to design, programme and commission bespoke automation machinery.
  • You will be utilising your skills and experience to write full machinery PLC software from scratch, create screens and programme HMI’s, programme a range of robot’s and produce supporting technical documentation.
  • You will also play a key role in departmental and company continuous improvements

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Determine customer/process requirements from discussions and technical documentation.
  • Produce customer sign off and technical documentation such as functional design specifications and system manuals.
  • Fully test and commission the equipment and machinery to ensure a successful FAT & SAT.
  • Programme a range of robots including ABB, KUKA, FANUC, Yaskawa.
  • Provide a high level of skill in interpreting the customers and regulatory requirements to ensure software designs are perfectly aligned.
  • Ensure relevant software design documents are issued in line with the schedule, enabling project deadlines to be met.
  • Liaise with suppliers to ensure suitable equipment function and operation within cost and schedule.
  • Liaise with electrical design and mechanical engineers to determine suitable system requirements.
  • Communicate accurate project status to the project leads, enabling pro-active planning.
  • Alongside the wider design team produce required technical documentation complying with UK and international standards and machinery directive, including risk assessments and machinery manuals.
  • Provide site support for customer meetings, projects scoping and SAT activities.
  • Provide on-site training for customer and machine operators.
  • Carry out design or timing calculations either by hand or using software to verifying suitability and performance.
  • Participate and present in design reviews.
  • Collaborate with wider design teams and departments to improve functions and processes.

KEY SKILLS

  • Experience with Siemens and Rockwell programming software. (TIA Portal, RSLogix, WinCC etc).
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Willingness to travel (within the UK and abroad).
  • Possess a good understanding of engineering principles in control system design.
  • Good level of problem-solving skills.
  • An ability to deliver simple solutions to technical problems.
  • Excellent time management and ability to prioritise.
  • Experience in carrying out technical calculations.
  • Strong computer and software skills.
  • An ability to interpret numerical data.
  • Excellent personal motivation and ability to handle pressure.
  • Experience in bespoke/special purpose machine building and design.
  • Experience with robotics and automation.
  • Experience with vision and sensing systems.
  • Preferably a history of design for industries such as food, automotive, aerospace and pharmaceuticals.
  • A good understanding and experience of UKCA/CE Technical file creation including risk assessments.
  • Experience with pneumatics, hydraulics and vacuum systems.
  • Ability to deal with a broad range of stakeholders including customers, suppliers and internal.
  • Always demonstrate respect, integrity, trust, and professionalism in interactions with all colleagues, customers and suppliers.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • Degree/equivalent or higher in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • HND, HNC, BTEC
  • Around 6 years or more industry experience
