We are looking for a reliable and experienced qualified Dispenser to join our friendly and supportive team at Wychwood Surgery. This is a key role within our friendly rural practice, supporting the safe and efficient dispensing of medications to our patients. You will work closely with GPs, the dispensary team and reception to ensure prescriptions are processed accurately, queries are managed effectively, and patients receive a high standard of care.

Main duties of the job

  • You will play a key role in the day-to-day running of our dispensary, ensuring prescriptions are processed safely, efficiently and to a consistently high standard.
  • Working closely with clinicians and the wider practice team, you will help manage queries, prioritise workload and support a smooth and timely service for patients.
  • The role involves accurate dispensing of medications, maintaining appropriate stock levels, and ensuring all work is carried out in line with practice procedures and safety requirements.

Job responsibilities

  • Process repeat and acute prescriptions in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Dispense medications in accordance with prescriptions, standard operating procedures and legal requirements.
  • Ensure all medications are correctly labelled and checked prior to issue.
  • Liaise with GPs and other clinicians regarding prescription queries or discrepancies.
  • Provide a professional and courteous service to patients, responding to queries and requests appropriately.
  • Manage and prioritise workload to ensure safe and efficient dispensing.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure confidentiality is upheld at all times.
  • Support stock control, including ordering, receipt, storage and rotation of medications.
  • Ensure the dispensary is kept clean, organised and compliant with health and safety standards.
  • Identify and report any dispensing errors, incidents or near misses in line with practice procedures.
  • Participate in audits and support quality improvement within the dispensary.

  • Work collaboratively with the dispensary, reception and clinical teams.
  • Support colleagues and contribute to a positive team environment.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of staff to ensure continuity of service.

Confidentiality

  • Maintain strict confidentiality in relation to patient and practice information at all times.
  • Comply with GDPR and data protection requirements.

  • Ensure safe handling and storage of medications.
  • Report any risks, incidents or concerns promptly.

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services (Dispensing) or equivalent qualification.
  • Previous experience working in a dispensing environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Previous experience in a GP dispensing practice.
  • Knowledge of clinical systems (e.g. EMIS).
  • Understanding of repeat prescribing processes.
