Traumatic Brain Injury Band 6 Occupational Therapist

To provide leadership, specialist advice and Occupational Therapy interventions as part of the neurological rehabilitation services, working as a key member of a wider multidisciplinary team for both in‑patients and out‑patients. This role requires working flexibly throughout the Trust and within a seven‑day therapy service. To be part of the Specialist Rehabilitation Services within the Trust, working within outpatient neurological rehabilitation with a specific focus on traumatic brain injury and meeting both Trust and national targets. To provide supervision and teaching for Occupational Therapists, students and assistants, and to deliver multidisciplinary education, advice and support.

Main duties of the job:

• Use specialist skills to perform advanced assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical, cognitive, psychological, and social needs.
• Develop and deliver individualized treatment programmes to patients with neurological conditions.
• Hold responsibility for own caseload, working without direct supervision, with supervision taking the form of regular reflective and clinical‑reasoning sessions.
• Liase with other Occupational Therapy and MDT colleagues to provide a flexible service during pressure times, due to workload or staffing difficulties.
• Participate in training and supervision of Junior Therapists and Assistants.
• Work and liaise with external agencies as required.

Person Specification:

Education and Training:

• Occupational Therapy degree.
• HCPC registration.
• Basic theoretical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, psychology, medicine and surgery.
• Comprehensive working knowledge of head injury and other neurological conditions.
• Working knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act.

Experience:

• Significant clinical experience within neuro, specifically traumatic brain injury.
• Extensive experience working with an MDT.
• Experience facilitating therapy groups.
• Experience working with patients with significant psychological distress.
• Experience administering and analysing a variety of cognitive assessments.

Skills and Ability:

• Ability to use a risk assessment approach to maximise patients’ function and safety.
• Planning and organisational skills to enable effective management of own patient workload.
• Experience of complex discharge planning, including the DST process (or equivalent), and liaison with external agencies.
