LOCUM SPECIALTY DOCTOR IN HAEMATOLOGY
We are seeking an enthusiastic individual dedicated to learning Haematology and joining our Haematology Team. The appointee will cover B6A Haematology Ward at MMUH Metropolitan University Hospital and day unit/clinics at Sandwell Campus. Preference will be given to candidates with general medical experience and MRCP or equivalent, but experience in haematology is desirable, not essential.
Additional experience in performing bone marrow procedures is desired, although training can be given. This is a locum replacement job for a fixed term of 12 months, starting as soon as possible. Opportunities exist for applying for a substantive specialty doctor post in the near future.
Main duties
- Improve the management of inpatients and outpatients with haematological disorders, mainly haemato-oncology but also sickle cell patients, general haematology, and thrombosis.
- Cover the B6a haemato‑oncology ward daily, assist consultant ward rounds, and supervise resident doctors.
- Perform bone marrow procedures, lumbar punctures, and attend a full day of clinics at Sandwell Hospital.
- No on‑call commitment, but can be negotiated.
The appointee will have the opportunity to develop laboratory expertise, clinical trials, research, teaching, and CPD activities. There will be opportunities to attend courses, conferences, and regional SPR training. Successful specialty doctors in the unit have passed FRCPath exams and obtained CCST.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The working week for a full‑time specialty doctor consists of 10 programmed activities (PAs), each with a nominal timetable value of 4 hours. Activities outside the hours of 7am–7pm Monday and Friday or on weekends/public holidays have a timetable value of three hours. A job plan and work schedule will set out agreed arrangements for how work is organised.

- Qualifications: Appropriate UK professional registration.
- Clinical Experience: Extensive experience at SHO or higher grade or equivalent; trained in recognised posts.
- Clinical Effectiveness: Experience of conducting clinical audit.
- Teaching and Training experience: Ability to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines.
- Other Requirements: Able to perform bone marrow biopsies.
