Job overview: Blackpool Teaching Hospital offers sexual health screening and care across Lancashire, with each main clinical site having satellite clinics across its geographical locality. This part‑time position (30 hours per week) is fixed term for maternity cover. The post holder will work as part of the Sexual Health Services team and will assess, plan, and provide sexual health advice, screening, and treatment (including contraception). The post holder will work across all areas of Sexual Health Services, including all outreach clinics as required.
Main duties of the job:
- Learn to undertake sexual health clinics, assessing patients and taking a sexual history.
- Perform venepuncture as per Trust Policy.
- Issue prescribed medication as requested by medical staff and non‑medical prescribers.
- Initiate treatments and implement partner notification measures as per local guidelines.
- Have sound knowledge of BASHH guidelines.
- Administer vaccinations and immunisations.
- Supply emergency contraception and start a method of contraception.
- Act as patient advocate and act in their best interests.
- Assess patients under the age of 16 using Fraser Guidelines; adhere to local Safeguarding Policies.
- Follow Infection Prevention Control (IPC) responsibilities.
- Report untoward incidents.
- Undertake appraisals/1:1s with staff up to and including Band 4.
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records.
- Code all clinical care provided (e.g., SHRAD, GUMCAD).
- Work within the legal responsibilities set out in the Venereal Diseases Regulations 1974 and the NHS Trust Act 1991.
- Maintain personal and professional development.
- Adhere to all Trust Policies and Procedures.
- Adhere to the NMC Code: Standards of Conduct at all times.
Qualifications:
- First‑Level Registered Nurse.
- Academic study (Contraceptive course).
- Evidence of working with young people and under 16s.
- Experience of working in nurse‑led clinics and PGDs.
- Ability to perform venepuncture.
- Basic knowledge of sexual health.
- Knowledge of local Sexual Health standards.
- Good working knowledge of clinical governance.
- Non‑judgemental, flexible, self‑motivated and able to prioritise own workload.
Skills:
- Venepuncture.
- Basic microscopy skills.
- Cytology trained.
- Ability to undertake genital examinations and screen clients – both sexes.
Additional skills required:
- IT literate, able to use a variety of data platforms.
Professional Registration: You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
Employment terms: Contract: Fixed term – 12 months (Maternity Cover). Hours: 30 hours per week (may involve evenings and weekends on rota). Salary: £32,073 – £39,043 per annum. Closing date: 01/07/2026 23:59. No smoking policy: Staff are not permitted to smoke on Trust premises or take breaks for the purposes of smoking.
