If so, we would love you to join our Paediatric Emergency Department team. Our Paediatric Emergency Department is fast‑paced, rewarding, and full of opportunities to grow. As a Band 6 nurse, you will be a clinical leader, role model, and problem‑solver, delivering high‑quality, compassionate care to our youngest patients while supporting and developing the wider nursing team.

Our department is purpose‑built to meet the needs of children and young people and includes:

  • 2 dedicated paediatric resuscitation bays
  • 1 high visibility cubicle
  • 7 main treatment cubicles

We have a strong senior presence, with a dedicated Nurse in Charge on every shift and Paediatric Emergency Medicine Consultants providing visible clinical leadership and support to ensure the right care is delivered at the right time. Paediatric ED has its own private entrance and dedicated waiting area, helping our patients and families feel safe, supported, and protected throughout their visit. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a supportive, forward‑thinking team where learning, development, and patient safety are at the heart of everything we do.

Main duties of the job:

  • Leading shifts and supporting your team.
  • Confidently running the shift, ensuring good patient flow and escalating capacity challenges.
  • Making decisions to ensure the safety of your patients and the department.
  • Triage – making quick, safe decisions and streaming to appropriate MDT.
  • Caring for everything from bumps and bruises to critical emergencies.
  • Mentoring junior staff and sharing your expertise.
  • Driving improvements and shaping the future of paediatric emergency care.
  • Acting as a role model to junior staff, leading by example to ensure a high quality of care.
  • Taking part in audits and service improvements, understanding KPIs and how these are delivered and maintained.
  • Safeguarding our patients and their families.
  • Escalating appropriately whilst problem‑solving to ensure patient safety and flow.

Person specification:

Experience:
  • Demonstrable post‑registration including relevant experience as a senior staff nurse and RCN.
  • Demonstrable experience in an Emergency Department – Emergency Department Nursing.
  • Triage competence.
  • Evidence of previous management.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience of PADR and performance management.
  • Evidence of having undertaken relevant further study or training as required for the post.
Qualifications:
  • RCN child nurse with current NMC registration.
  • Mentorship course or equivalent, or willingness to undertake one within the first year.
  • IV competent.
  • Counselling skills certificate/qualification.
  • EPALS/APLS certificate.
  • Degree level qualification in a health‑related subject.
  • You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
