Band 3 – Healthcare Science Assistant (Part-time, 30 hours per week)

Annual salary: £25,760 – £27,476 (pro rata)

Join the Specimen Reception team at Churchill Hospital as a part-time Healthcare Science Assistant. This role is ideal for individuals with limited laboratory experience who wish to start a career in Healthcare Science.
Main responsibilities
- Receive specimens into the laboratory and enter data into the system.
- Carry out practical processes such as cell culture, DNA extraction and other routine laboratory procedures.
- Maintain equipment and arrange the transport of samples to other laboratories.
- Perform general housekeeping and administrative tasks, ensuring a clean and safe work environment.
- Participate in regular training, teaching and departmental meetings, and share standard operating procedures with new members of staff.
- Assist with quality control activities, record keeping, and comply with safety and hygiene policies.
Eligibility & qualifications
- 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including science.
- QCF Level 3 or equivalent qualification (BTEC, NVQ, etc.).
- Experience with Microsoft Office and database use; previous laboratory experience advantageous.
- Basic knowledge of human genetics (DNA and chromosomes).
- Strong attention to detail, organisational skills, teamwork, record‑keeping and communication.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to a scientific working environment.
Working hours & conditions
Monday to Friday, 8 am - 6 pm. Shift patterns: 8 am - 4 pm, 9 am - 5 pm, or 10 am - 6 pm. Full-time rotation may occur.
Probation: 6-month period unless existing staff with the Trust.
Vaccination: COVID
