The post holder will play a central role in the organisation, development and delivery of high‑quality undergraduate medical student education within the Colorectal service at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB).

Working in partnership with the Specialty Teaching Lead for Undergraduate Medical Education and the Undergraduate Medical Education Department, the post holder will support the delivery of a comprehensive and engaging clinical placement experience for University of Nottingham medical students.

The role includes facilitating structured teaching sessions, supporting clinical learning in practice and contributing to the assessment and examination processes.

The post holder will combine clinical expertise in colorectal nursing with education delivery, ensuring teaching is patient‑centred, clinically effective and aligned with Trust policies, professional standards and national guidance.

The post holder will also contribute to the ongoing development, quality improvement and evaluation of the undergraduate teaching programme, ensuring effective use of resources and a positive learning environment for students.

Main duties of the job

• Deliver and support a range of teaching activities including induction, tutorials, clinical skills sessions and ward‑based teaching.
• Facilitate student learning in clinical environments and ensure achievement of placement objectives.
• Coordinate with clinical teams to provide access to learning opportunities (clinics, theatres, ward rounds).
• Support student assessment, examinations and provide constructive feedback.
• Act as a key point of contact for students, offering guidance and sign‑posting to support services where required.
• Contribute to the development, evaluation and improvement of the teaching programme.
• Maintain high standards of specialist colorectal clinical practice and model best practice.
• Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary and medical education teams to support delivery of high‑quality teaching.
• Escalate any concerns related to student conduct or wellbeing in line with Trust and University processes.
• Participate in relevant education meetings and contribute to programme development.

Person specification

Qualifications

• Registered clinical practitioner with post‑registration experience at Band 6 or above in a relevant clinical area.
• Evidence of ongoing CPD and recent clinical practice.
• Teaching/education qualification (e. g. PGCert, PGDip, LIPS or equivalent).
• Extended scope of practice training.

Skills

• Ability to deliver teaching to a range of audiences in varied environments.
• Ability to communicate complex or sensitive information effectively to different professional groups.
• Understanding of adult learning principles and overcoming barriers to learning.
• Ability to produce written reports and educational materials.
• Demonstrates clinical leadership and change management skills within a multidisciplinary team.

Experience

• Experience of using audit and/or research to inform and influence clinical practice.
