Job overview

We need a great Plumber based at Chorley and South Ribble Hospital to join our Estates team to keep the hospital environment safe, operational and supporting the health and wellbeing of patients, staff and visitors—day in, day out. This role blends planned maintenance with emergency repairs and other duties in a dynamic environment.

Main duties of the job

  • You will work as part of a small team carrying out planned preventive maintenance and repairs to engineering plant and equipment.
  • You will work with a degree of autonomy, managing your own work activity.
  • Some repairs are urgent and some work can be in hazardous environments.
  • The role includes on-call duties as part of a 1 in 4 rota.

You will demonstrate a good working knowledge of plumbing and drainage systems in compliance with statutory requirements and good practice guidelines. You will apply attention to detail and accurately record test and PPM results to maintain effective records.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with managers, colleagues, contractors and service users.
  • Liaise with contractors and other parties during normal and on-call hours.
  • Provide operational advisory support to Trust staff to ensure safety standards and procedures are met.
  • Advise on maintenance issues outside normal hours.
  • Respond to estates incidents and coordinate with Trust staff as needed.
  • Liaise with Wards and Departments to specify work accurately and complete within priority response times.
  • Carry out planned preventive maintenance inspections and testing in line with Trust procedures and statutory requirements.
  • Refer to engineering drawings and technical manuals.
  • Assist in commissioning of mechanical services, plant and equipment.
  • Understand mechanical and plumbing systems across Trust properties, diagnose faults, and pass on knowledge to others.
  • Maintain complex systems including boilers, heating, DHW, water systems, tanks, drains, BMS and other hospital plant.
  • Work in hazardous areas following safety procedures and ensure risk assessments are observed.
  • Maintain compliance with Trust policies (fire safety, infection control, health and safety, COSHH, manual handling).
  • Prioritise own workload and contribute to performance management records.
  • Maintain security of plant and equipment and ensure plant rooms are secure.
  • Support engineering projects, new equipment testing, commissioning, and cost/quality considerations.
  • Keep plans and records updated and accurate.

Person specification

Qualifications
  • Attained a recognised advanced craft certified qualification (e.g. City and Guilds qualification or NVQ level 3)
  • Relevant credited technical qualification
  • Be willing and able to participate in an ongoing training development programme within NHS maintenance services
  • Attained or working towards a technical qualification in a specialist area
  • Attained a recognised and certified supervisory/ leadership/ management qualification
Knowledge & Experience
  • Competence in the required range of technical aspects applicable to the post
  • Completed a recognised engineering apprenticeship
  • Ability to understand and comply with detailed procedures
  • Continued training across traditional trade groups
  • Previous experience in the NHS or large complex building service installations (non-domestic)
