Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.
Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

Job overview
The successful applicant will provide a specialist clinical service in General Plastic Surgery at the St Andrew’s Centre based at Broomfield Hospital and its satellite sites, with a special interest in microsurgical Head & Neck Cancer Reconstruction, Facial Palsy Reconstruction and Complex Skin Cancer. The successful applicant will also conduct and lead clinically relevant research to improve patient outcomes that will utilise and foster collaboration between local and national university facilities, and the clinical forum at St. Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns.
Main duties of the job
- Providing emergency and ongoing expertise for patients and services regarding patients referred to him/her.
- The total clinical care of the patients referred to him/her, including all administrative duties associated with patient care, proper record keeping and good communications maintained with patients and their general practitioners.
- Positive collaboration with colleagues to provide effective clinical leadership for all the staff in the Plastic Surgery Service.
- Multidisciplinary teamwork is envisaged as a key component of this, as a core member of the Head & Neck Cancer MDT and Facial Palsy MDT.
- He/she will participate in out of hours consultant cover and in the cover arrangements during colleagues’ annual/study leave.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Undertaking regular ward rounds.
- Participate in clinical audit and in continuing professional education.
- Supervision, teaching, training and professional development of the junior medical staff working in the service. Consultants are fully involved in developing a high standard of teaching of junior medical staff, nurses, and medical students and in designing and contributing to the process for establishment and approval of training posts for junior medical staff.
- Maintaining standards of care for his/her service to the Medical Director, the Chief Executive and Chairman and the Board of the Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust.

- Qualifications
- MBBS or Equivalent
- Full GMC Registration (incl entry on Specialist Register)
- Fellowship in Head and Neck / Facial Palsy Reconstruction
- Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team
- Ability to undertake microsurgical reconstruction for Head and Neck cancer and Facial Palsy independently
- Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff
- Evidence of teaching activities undertaken as one to one, small group, anatomical and cadaveric dissections, and lectures to larger groups at regional or national level
