Main area: General Surgery & Urology. Grade: Band 6. Contract: Permanent. Hours: Full time – 37.5 hours per week (Days/nights/weekends/Bank Holidays). Salary: £39,959 – £48,117 per annum.

Job overview: The ward is a high performing, forward‑thinking unit with a supportive Senior Nursing team. We admit and discharge a high volume of patients. As a 19‑single‑roomed General Surgical, Urology, Gynaecology and ENT ward, you will maintain high standards of care, remain professional at all times and work closely with the team. The role offers opportunities to develop leadership and clinical skills.

Main duties of the job:

  • Assess patients as individuals and tailor care to their needs.
  • Admit patients from the emergency pathway, theatres and SAU, GAU and EPAU clinics.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, compassion, reliability and flexibility.
  • Provide compassionate, dynamic, reliable and flexible care with exemplary clinical knowledge and communication skills.
  • Serve as a role model, motivating and inspiring the team to perform at their best.
  • Lead on the ongoing development of the ward and support the Senior Sister to achieve excellence of care for patients in the Surgical division.

Person specification:

Education and training: NMC registration and re‑validation requirements. Significant post‑registration experience, including at a Band 5 post. Evidence of degree, and/or working towards a higher degree or equivalent experience.

Experience and knowledge: Evidence of management/leadership skills gained through theory or experience. Experience of mentoring, assessor qualifications, supporting, coaching and developing staff. Specific knowledge of the clinical area/specialty. Evidence of teaching or nurturing and providing advice.

Skills and ability: Decision‑making ability, assessing associated risks and taking appropriate action. Management of the clinical workload, prioritising and re‑prioritising to contribute to safe staffing.
