Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our existing secretarial team at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust. This will be working within the ENT Department based at Sandwell Health Campus. The role will require strong communication skills and a knowledge of Cancer Pathways and RTT is desirable.

Within our Trust, all full time secretaries provide full secretarial support to 2 consultants and their junior doctors, while working together as a team. A part time secretary will provide full secretarial support for 1 consultant and their junior doctors.

Main duties of the job

As the Medical Secretary, you will manage the administrative processes associated with patient pathways and contribute to the overall effectiveness of clinical teams (this including patient experience, patient flow and waiting list management). You will provide secretarial and administrative support to Consultants and clinical teams to support in the delivery of high quality co‑ordinated and integrated care. This will include liaison with patients, carers, GP’s and other service users. You will book appointments for patients on cancer pathway within National Targets and will be responsible for raising any capacity issues with the Line Manager. Robust knowledge of IT systems is required as well as an ability to work with multiple systems at the same time. Excellent typing speed and grammar is also desirable.

Person specification

  • Substantial experience within the NHS
  • Knowledge of waiting list / patient management systems
  • Knowledge of PAS systems and other relevant databases
  • Cancer Services knowledge and/or experience
  • Experience of managing 18 week pathways

Qualifications

  • GCSE English and Maths Grade C and above
  • Excellent IT skills to include complex databases
  • AMPSAR qualification or evidence of extensive knowledge of medical terminology
  • Evidence of relevant continuing professional development
  • RSA Typing Level 2
  • AMSPAR NVQ4 in a relevant subject to the role i.e. Business Administration or Leadership and Management or willingness to work towards
