Locum Specialty Doctor in Anaesthesia

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country, providing a wide range of general and specialist clinical services across four hospitals including the John Radcliffe, Churchill, Nuffield Orthopaedic, and Horton in Banbury.

Responsibilities

The postholder will provide elective and emergency anaesthesia to adults and children, be part of the hospital cardiac arrest team, and participate in the resident on‑call rota.

Key duties include

  • Provide elective and emergency anaesthesia for the following surgical specialties:
  • General Surgery (including paediatrics, breast and colorectal)
  • Gynaecology
  • Urology
  • Trauma
  • Oral Surgery
  • Paediatric Dental Surgery
  • Cataract and minor Eye Surgery
  • Plastic Surgery (including paediatrics)
  • Obstetrics or other specialty interest (by arrangement, in Oxford)
  • Deliver emergency airway support and participate in initial resuscitation and transfer of critically ill patients.
  • Manage a mix of normal days, long days and nights on the on‑call rota.
  • Work with high‑dependency and enhanced care units and coordinate with consultants in AICU at John Radcliffe Hospital for escalation to level 3 care.
  • Collaborate with the Paediatric Intensive Care facilities and retrieval service at John Radcliffe.

Qualifications / Training

  • Full registration and licence to practice with the General Medical Council.
  • Completed at least four years’ full‑time postgraduate training (or equivalent part‑time/flexible), with at least two years in anaesthesia.
  • Advanced Life Support; Primary FRCA; Final FRCA or equivalent; ATLS, APLS or equivalent; Formal transfer training; Completion of core training in anaesthesia.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years recognised training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the time of appointment.
  • Broad anaesthetic experience equivalent to a district general hospital or teaching hospital anaesthetic department.
  • Experience in paediatric and trauma anaesthesia.
  • Critical care transfer experience.
  • Self‑confident decision making, recognising when help is required.
  • At least 5 years of anaesthetics experience / PG training in anaesthesia.
  • Current NHS experience.
  • Experience in intensive care.
  • Capable of undertaking solo anaesthesia lists.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Leading clinical teams.
  • Work independently or recognise when help is needed.
  • Effectively prioritise, organise and manage clinical workload.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the post.
  • Perform at the level expected of an anaesthetic registrar, participating in resident on‑call rota.
  • Good personal and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective communication in English.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Routine clinical audit experience.
  • Experience in managing rotas, organising conferences, chairing meetings.
  • Teaching undergraduates and trainees.
  • Supporting an anaesthetic department through ACSA.
