We are recruiting a Senior Chemotherapy Nurse to support patients receiving systemic anti‑cancer therapy (SACT). The role requires expert knowledge of SACT, safe administration, adherence to national guidelines and high standards of infection control. You will work as part of the Macmillan Chemotherapy Nursing Team to provide comprehensive, caring service to patients undergoing cancer treatments, including holistic care planning, implementation and evaluation.
Main Duties of the Job
- Administer chemotherapy and supportive treatments using excellent cannulation skills.
- Provide support and advice to patients and their families.
- Operate under a fixed‑term contract to cover maternity leave, with potential for a permanent role.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership, support and mentorship to junior nursing staff, fostering a safe and positive learning environment.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to support service development, audits and quality improvement.
- Recognise patients’ changing needs and liaise for referrals to appropriate services.
- Assist in data collection and analysis as required.
- Review blood results; liaise with pharmacy, protocol and consultants regarding suitability for treatment; authorise prescription charts.
- Assess toxicities and recommend dose adjustments in liaison with pharmacy and consultants.
- Coordinate acquisition of chemotherapy drugs and scheduling of patient appointments.
- Organise investigations, review results and manage treatment decisions.
- Schedule meetings and maintain professional communication with patients and carers.
- Provide phlebotomy and cannulation services; manage central venous catheter care in line with evidence‑based practice.
- Offer scalp cooling therapy for suitable patients.
- Deliver telephone and emergency support for patients experiencing complications.
- Perform observations, respond to abnormalities, and maintain accurate documentation.
- Participate in patient and public involvement activities; support equality, diversity and human rights.
- Ensure efficient use of physical and financial resources; report to the Head of Nursing or Lead Chemotherapy Nurse.
- Engage in professional development, attend mandatory training, and maintain up‑to‑date knowledge through conferences and literature.
- Fulfil Health & Safety duties, including risk assessment, incident reporting and statutory duties of care.
- Provide teaching, education and training to health professionals, patients, relatives and carers; deliver internal and external presentations.
- Participate in Macmillan service reviews and promote Macmillan resources and services to patients.
- Engage with Macmillan Cancer Support, demonstrate and model the Macmillan Human Rights Standard for cancer care.
