Rotational Occupational Therapist in Wigan

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the well established and dynamic Occupational Therapy Team at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Rotational Occupational Therapist. We are recruiting to a 37.5 hour per week post. Rotations can include, but are not limited to, Community Therapy, Intermediate Care, Paediatrics, Learning Disabilities, Orthopaedics and Acute therapies. Some rotations are Monday to Sunday and some rotations will require access to a vehicle with appropriate business insurance.

On each rotation the post holder will be supported by passionate and experienced team members who will help guide and support your individual learning needs and ensure that the best standards of care are provided. You must be a registered Occupational Therapist with HCPC registration but we will consider students in their final year.

Main duties of the job

• To provide a high standard occupational therapy services to patients within the rotation.
• To act as a source of knowledge on the management of current caseloads and provide an advisory service to patients, relatives, other healthcare professionals and students.
• To take a role in the assessment and treatment of patients within the rotation, to provide occupational therapy treatment indicated and to maintain records as an autonomous practitioner.
• To hold responsibility for own case load and be responsible for a defined area of the service or a particular patient type, working with direct supervision.
• To assist teams in planning, co-ordination, delivering and evaluating the therapy services provided within the rotation.
• To participate in the education and training of occupational therapists, other health professionals and OT students in the management of OT conditions as appropriate in the respective rotation.

Planning and Organisational Duties

• To be responsible for a designated area of work, as agreed with the team leader, and to plan and organise efficiently and effectively with regard to patients management and use of time.
• To decide priorities for own work area, balancing other patient related and professional demands, and ensure that there remain in accordance with those of the section as a whole.
• Be responsible for the safe and competent use of gym and therapy equipment by patients and student therapists, through teaching, training and supervision of practice.
• To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date documentation, in line with legal and departmental requirements and communicate assessment and treatment results to the appropriate disciplines in form of reports and letters.
• To be actively involved in the collection of appropriate data and statistics.
• To undertake any other duties that might be considered appropriate by the team leader or the Head of Adult Clinical services.

Communications and Key Working Relationships

• To communicate effectively with patients and carers to maximise rehabilitation potential and to ensure basic understanding of condition.
• To maintain up to date written/electronic records and statistical data, documenting/registering these in line with professional and Trust requirements.
• To appropriately refer on to other health and social care professionals, also advocating appropriate self-management to promote independence when possible.
• To develop excellent professional relationships with local health and social care services as part of the integration, working closely with local services to ensure holistic care is provided.
• The post holder is required to overcome barriers to communication using a range of verbal, non-verbal and listening skills.
• To use communication skills to motivate and encourage the patient to be responsible for their own health and wellbeing.

Person specification

• Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
• HCPC Registration
• Evidence of relevant post graduate courses/CPD
• Member of appropriate professional body
• Pre or Post Graduate Experience of working in a variety of settings
• Experience of treating patients with a variety of conditions
• Experience of applying the OT process with a range of patients
• Experience of managing a caseload (under supervision).
• NHS experience (placement/voluntary/employment).
• Experience of working as an autonomous practitioner.
