Main duties of the job

The role of the Nursing Associate is to work as part of the multi-professional team, delivering evidence-based public health care that focuses on the needs of the population within the service. The Nursing Associate contributes to the ongoing assessment of the child/young person and the school community, providing and monitoring care in line with service pathways, as agreed with the supervising Community Staff Nurse or Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.

The Nursing Associate will work as part of the children’s 0-19 universal service, contributing to the provision of high-quality services for children, young people and families working within the Healthy Child Programme framework and the Best Start in Life priorities. Supporting the delivery of national and local public health agendas in response to identified health needs, working in partnership with partner agencies to meet agreed standards, objectives and statutory requirements.

Nursing Associates are equipped with the knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and behaviours relevant to employment; and will act in accordance with the NMC Code: Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role supports the 0–19 Team in delivering the Healthy Child Programme through a tiered approach, providing universal, targeted, and specialist services across community settings.

The postholder delivers compassionate, safe, and effective care to children, young people, and families in homes, schools, clinics, and community environments. Working under the supervision of a registered nurse, they undertake health assessments, monitor child development, and contribute to early intervention programmes that promote physical, mental, and behavioural wellbeing.

Key responsibilities include supporting families to improve health outcomes, delivering evidence-based interventions, and making appropriate referrals to partner agencies. The role involves strong multi‑agency collaboration to ensure integrated care, safeguarding children and vulnerable individuals, and promoting resilience and life opportunities.

The postholder contributes to health promotion activities, maintains accurate clinical records, and ensures care is delivered in line with professional standards and safeguarding policies. They are expected to manage their workload effectively, engage in continuous professional development, and support a positive team environment.

Strong communication skills are essential, alongside the ability to build effective relationships with families, colleagues, and partner organisations, ensuring high‑quality care and positive outcomes for children and young people.

Person specification

Qualifications

• Registered Nursing Associate on the NMC Register with a Foundation Degree
• GCSEs Grade C or above in Maths and English Language / New GCSE Grade 4-9 in Maths and English Language OR Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English or Equivalent (not entry level 2)
• QCF in Care/Health & Social Care Level 2/3 or equivalent experience

Experience

• Experience with children
• Community experience
• Experience of working in a school or educational setting

Skills

• Ability to provide compassionate, safe and effective care and support to patients in a range of settings
• Ability to monitor the health of children within their care on an assessment basis in partnership with patients, families and carers
• Ability to deliver evidence-based interventions to children, young people and families.
• Ability to work in partnership between services to meet the needs of children and young people
• Ability to take part in reflective practice and clinical supervision activities
• Ability to organise and prioritise own delegated workload
• Ability to communicate effectively (written, verbal and non‑verbal communication) with patients/relatives and carers and all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
• Ability to develop effective and appropriate relationships with people, their families, carers and colleagues
• Ability to support, supervise, assess and act as a role model to nursing associate students, other learners and health care support workers as required within the clinical setting
• Maintain high standards of quality in corporate and clinical record keeping, ensuring information is always recorded accurately, appropriately and kept up to date
• IT skills relevant to school health records and reporting.
• Knowledge and understanding of SystmOne Electronic Patient Records.

Knowledge

• Understanding of the scope of the role of the Nursing Associate in the context of the nursing and interdisciplinary team and the organisation, and how the role may contribute to service
• Knowledge of the Healthy Child Programme
• Understanding of the principles of safeguarding children, young people and families.
• Knowledge of the School Nursing Service
• Knowledge of when to seek advice and escalate to the appropriate professional for expert help and advice
• Understand requirements for NMC professional Revalidation
