Job overview:
The post holder will provide Clinical Leadership and line management to the clinical teams within Live Well and Urgent Emergency Care. They will support the overall day-to-day functioning of the clinical departments, ensuring that the highest quality of patient centred care is delivered by the appropriately skilled nursing/midwifery workforce through effective leadership, setting, monitoring and maintenance of professional standards, collaborative working, management of complaints and leading the nursing contribution to Clinical Governance at a Directorate level.
Main duties of the job:
- The Modern Matron will be responsible for delivering some aspects of corporate professional Nursing and Midwifery Agenda as it relates to the area in which they work.
- Supporting the Ward/Departmental Managers/Heads of Nursing/Midwifery with Clinical Governance, effectiveness and quality.
- The Modern Matron will monitor clinical and environmental standards and act as a source to continuously improve these.
- The Modern Matron will contribute to the strengthened role of the ward/Departmental Senior Nurses and Midwives, supporting the development of effective clinical leaders at all levels.
- The Modern Matron will act as a role model and work within legislation and Trust procedures monitoring and maintaining professional standards.
- The Modern Matron will provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in order to provide assistance and advice to the workforce, patients and carers.
- The Modern Matron will be responsible for monitoring clinical standards within clinical teams, ensuring staff competency, setting objectives and targets, and keeping agreed programmes of work to timetable.
- The Modern Matron will also be expected to play a proactive role in quality improvement.
- The post holder will contribute to ongoing service development and redesign through the demonstration of expert clinical knowledge within their specialist field.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
- Participate, in conjunction with the Divisional Management Team, in the production of the Division’s Annual Business Plan.
- To contribute to the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Division’s strategic and operational plan concerning staff competency, staff objectives and targets, time plans, quality improvement.
- Co-ordinate and assess the operational planning of the service to enable the Trust’s and the Divisional objectives to be met.
- Monitor service delivery, identifying and investigating any issues arising within the clinical area, formulating and adjusting plans to ensure that care is delivered in the appropriate care setting.
- Collaborate with all staff to maintain a safe, clean working environment, recognising changing priorities and risks, and implementing corrective actions within own limits and informing the relevant people.
- Ensure that staffing levels are appropriate to patient need by working with Team Leaders and Senior Nurses and Midwives to assess patient dependency and adjust duty rotas accordingly.
- Leading by example to promote the service and disseminate good practice both internal and external to the Trust.
- Liaise closely with multi-disciplinary staff to develop evidence based clinical standards, policies and guidelines to support the efficient and effective service delivery.
- Provide effective clinical leadership and management which fosters teamwork across professional and organisational boundaries.
- To support clinical governance leads within the divisions by contributing to the development and maintenance of governance processes.
- To act as a role model and work within legislation and Trust procedures, ensuring the compliance of all staff working within the unit.
- Guide and coach ward/departmental managers in developing and strengthening leadership skills.
- Ensure all nurses comply with NMC regulations and work within their scope of practice.
- Responsible for investigation of and action planning of all reported incidents.
Person specification:
- Current NMC or HCPC Registration
- Qualified in speciality
- Masters level studies or equivalent portfolio of evidence
- Experience within a senior role
- Post basic qualification in leadership and/or management
- Teaching qualification
- IOSH experience
- Evidence of involvement in the development of professional leadership, leading to innovation in practice
- Experience of successfully managing the implementation of change
- Experience at senior level
- Experience in clinical audit/benchmarking
