Job overview: The post holder will provide Clinical Leadership and line management to the clinical teams within Live Well and Urgent Emergency Care. They will support the overall day-to-day functioning of the clinical departments, ensuring that the highest quality of patient centred care is delivered by the appropriately skilled nursing/AHP workforce, through effective leadership, setting, monitoring and maintenance of professional standards, collaborative working, management of complaints and leading the nursing contribution to Clinical Governance at a Directorate level.
Main duties of the job:
- The Matron/Clinical Quality Lead will be responsible for delivering some aspects of corporate professional Nursing and AHP Agenda as it relates to the area in which they work.
- Supporting the Ward/Departmental Managers/Deputy Director of Nursing and AHP's with Clinical Governance, effectiveness and quality.
- Monitoring clinical and environmental standards and acting as a source to continuously improve these.
- Contributing to the strengthened role of the ward/Departmental Senior Nurses and AHP's, supporting the development of effective clinical leaders at all levels.
- Ensuring that leadership and clinical practice functions are carried out effectively, making best use of available resources.
- Providing a visible, accessible and authoritative presence to assist and advise the workforce, patients and carers.
- Monitoring clinical standards within clinical teams, ensuring staff competency, setting objectives and targets, and keeping agreed programmes of work to timetable.
- Playing a proactive role in quality improvement.
- Contributing to ongoing service development and redesign through the demonstration of expert clinical knowledge within their specialist field.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
- Participate, in conjunction with the Divisional Management Team, in the production of the Division’s Annual Business Plan.
- Contribute to the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Division’s strategic and operational plan concerning staff competency, staff objectives and targets, time plans, quality improvement.
- Co‑ordinate and assess the operational planning of the service to enable the Trust’s and the Divisional objectives to be met.
- Monitor service delivery, identifying and investigating any issues arising within the clinical area, formulating and adjusting plans to ensure that care is delivered in the appropriate care setting.
- Collaborate with all staff to maintain a safe, clean working environment, recognising changing priorities and risks, and implementing corrective actions within own limits and informing the relevant people.
- Ensure that staffing levels are appropriate to patient need by working with Team Leaders and Senior Nurses and AHP's to assess patient dependency and adjust duty rotas accordingly.
- Develop proposals for changes to skill mix and staff establishments.
- Lead by example to promote the service and disseminate good practice both internal and external to the Trust.
- Liaise closely with multi-disciplinary staff to develop evidence-based clinical standards, policies and guidelines to support efficient and effective service delivery.
- Provide effective clinical leadership and management which fosters teamwork across professional and organisational boundaries.
- Support clinical governance leads within the divisions by contributing to the development and maintenance of governance processes.
- Act as a role model and work within legislation and Trust procedures, ensuring compliance of all staff working within the unit.
- Guide and coach ward/departmental managers in developing and strengthening leadership skills.
- Ensure all nurses comply with NMC regulations and work within their scope of practice.
- Responsible for investigation of and action planning of all reported incidents.
Person specification:
- Qualifications: Current NMC or HCPC Registration, Qualified in speciality, Masters level studies or equivalent portfolio of evidence.
- Experience: Evidence of involvement in the development of professional leadership, leading to innovation in practice, experience of successfully managing the implementation of change, experience at senior level, experience in clinical audit/benchmarking.
- Skills: Evidence of effective people management and leadership skills, demonstrate effective communication/negotiation skills, able to make operational judgements involving complex facts/situations, strong analytical skills.
- Knowledge: Demonstrates specialist expertise underpinned by theory, knowledge of budgetary control and Standing Financial Instructions, knowledge of key performance indicators for clinical governance, evidence of understanding of the role of Modern Matron, knowledge of workforce planning.
- Additional: Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, honest, open-minded, treat colleagues with dignity and respect, capacity to work with clinicians and staff at all levels.
