Job overview

We require a Healthcare Support Worker for Pemberton ward, based at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. The ward is a specialist hospital ward designed to care for older adults living with frailty, multiple long-term health conditions, and complex care needs. The ward provides comprehensive assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and discharge planning through a multidisciplinary team approach.

The aim is to improve health outcomes, maintain independence, prevent further deterioration, and support patients to return home or to the most appropriate care setting as safely and quickly as possible. Care is delivered by a team that may include doctors, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, social workers, and discharge coordinators, who work together to address patients' physical, cognitive, emotional, and social needs.

Frailty wards often focus on falls prevention, mobility, nutrition, medication review, dementia care, delirium management, and personalised care planning, ensuring that treatment is tailored to each individual's goals and circumstances.

Note the following essential requirements:

  • Experience in a UK healthcare/NHS role
  • Level 2 Health & Social Care NVQ Level 2 or NHS accredited Care Certificate

An Enhanced DBS with Adults' Barred List checks will be obtained during pre-employment checks.

Main duties of the job

  • To assist and work under the direction of Registered Nurses, Chartered Physiotherapists and State Registered Occupational Therapists
  • To assist in the administration and clerical duties of the unit
  • To administer and monitor the stock of aids for independence and other departmental equipment
  • To work flexibly when required, which will involve covering a 7 day 24hr service

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assist patients with the provision of washing, dressing, personal care, beverages and/or meals.
  • Assist qualified nursing and medical staff where requested.
  • Communicate with all members of the team to maintain a good service provision.
  • Ensure that all patients are able to meet their hygiene needs, providing a level of assistance appropriate to the individual.
  • Prepare and support the patient appropriately during any activity that is to be undertaken.
  • Alert the registered nurse where you notice any changes in the patient’s health and well‑being or any possible risks.
  • Undertake observations/tasks such as patient temperature, weighing, fluid checks as directed.
  • Ensure effective use of material resources/supplies within the ward/unit in consultation with senior staff.
  • Assist with the general cleaning and re‑stocking of resources where appropriate as well as cleaning and preparing patients beds.
  • Contribute to own personal development and take an active part in learning opportunities.
  • Behaviours are being compassionate, respectful, accountable, working collaboratively and be forward thinking.
