The predicted salary is between 43200 - 72000 £ per year.

The appointed Consultant will be clinically responsible for:

  • Consultant sign off for RCEM designated conditions.
  • Provide senior clinical input into complex / serious cases in ED.
  • Risk management and addressing capacity issues in the department by liaising with the management team and following policies to mobilise other specialty teams.
  • Lead role to arrange safe disposition of patients in ED for a longer than desired period of time.
  • When faced with an exit block in the department, the Emergency Department consultant will try to mitigate the effects in ED whilst solutions are sought within the hospital to improve flow.
  • Follow Roles and Responsibilities delineated by the department to facilitate working in different areas in ED.
  • All consultants are expected to participate in the on-call rota.
  • The post-holder will be expected to be committed to the concept of lifelong learning and produce and maintain a Personal Development Plan and Job Plan in agreement with the Clinical Director.

Main duties of the job:

  • The Emergency Care Centre comprises different areas and a dedicated x-ray facility.
  • Adult Majors 1 Assessment Area - 16 cubicles.
  • Adult Majors 2 Assessment Area (for ambulant patients) - 10 cubicles.
  • Clinical Decisions Area - 6 beds and a seated area.
  • An Urgent Care Centre at Wigan and Leigh.
  • Separate areas for ambulance and walk-in triage.

On-Call:

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational. The role could require you to work across all areas in the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

  • To maintain the highest clinical standards in emergency medicine.
  • Adheres to professional requirements of annual appraisal, job planning and reviews of performance and progression.
  • Demonstrates the professional values and behaviours set out in Good Medical Practice.
  • Provides safe and effective care for critically ill patients for all ages with specialist help and guidance.
  • To lead resuscitation teams and safely transfer critically ill patients.
  • Evaluates and instigates initial management of safeguarding concerns.

Person specification:

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.
  • Training & experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT.
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register in Emergency Medicine or within 6 months of CCT date at interview.
  • ATLS / ETC, APLS, ALS Provider.
  • Ultrasound trained.
  • ATLS / ETC, APLS, ALS instructor.

Experience and Achievements:

  • Broad experience in Emergency Medicine in the UK including Paediatric EM.
  • Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.
  • Evidence of having undertaken audit work that has brought about change.
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research.
  • Evidence of personal practice in all areas described by RCEM curriculum role as Consultant and all its implied responsibility for clinical management tasks.
  • Experience of using evidence base to support decision making.
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit.
  • Experience in demonstrating clinical procedures / techniques to other healthcare professionals.
  • Advanced Airway Management trained.
  • Experience of managing an Emergency Department in the last 3 years.
  • Experience as Clinical Team Leader.

Skills:

  • Ability to lead and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and all levels of staff.
  • Flexible attitude, polite and professional manner.
  • Ability to manage conflicting & unpredictable demands.
  • Competent to work under pressure.
  • Ability to motivate, innovate and support staff of all disciplines.
  • Ability to manage and lead clinical team.
  • Competent in basic information technology.
  • Ability to supervise, appraise, coach and mentor trainee and other doctors.
  • Enhanced IT skills.

Knowledge:

  • Ability to design and deliver talks / lectures / workshops effectively.
  • Commitment to continuing medical education and development.
  • Understanding of research methodology and its use in clinical practice.
  • Understanding of the Clinical Governance process.
  • Formal training in Teaching.
  • Understanding of NHS resources & resource management.

  • Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.
