Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint an enthusiastic Consultant in Colorectal Surgery to join our General Surgical department to provide a high-quality surgical service to the population of Wigan Borough.

Main duties of the job

  • The appointee is expected to contribute to the delivery of the colorectal service at WWL Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, undertaking specialist colorectal OPD clinics, elective colorectal theatre lists, lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, and participation in one or both of the Colorectal Cancer and Inflammatory Bowel Disease MDTs.
  • The NBOCA reports in 2024 recorded over 180 colorectal cancers reported by the trust and all our Colorectal Surgeons meet the ACPGBI requirement of a minimum of 20 curative cancer resections per year.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • The appointee will provide a colorectal elective and general surgery emergency service, including an on-call element.
  • Responsibilities include:
  • Contributing to and participating in the development of the Colorectal surgery service
  • Providing specialist advice to patients regarding their illness
  • Providing clinical care to patients referred to them
  • Delivering the emergency surgical service (hot week, weekend and out of hours, 1 in 10 rota)
  • Working with colleagues to provide effective clinical leadership for all staff in the service
  • Delivering the elective Colorectal service (benign and malignant major surgery, day-case coloproctology) and participation in delivery of emergency General Surgery
  • Contributing to the trust endoscopy service
  • Delivering emergency surgery, including hot gallbladder service and elective operating sessions at RAEI site, day-case minor coloproctology theatre sessions, outpatient clinics and endoscopy sessions at Leigh Infirmary and Thomas Linacre Centre
  • Providing specialist colorectal support to General Surgeons

Person specification

  • Qualifications
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • MRCPCH, MRCP or equivalent
  • Full registration with GMC and/or inclusion on the Specialist Register of GMC or within 6 months of completion of training at the date of interview
  • Up to date APLS and NLS provider certificates
  • Higher qualification e.g. MD, PhD
  • APLS and/or NLS Instructor
  • Skills
    • Management of a wide range of Colorectal Surgery
    • Safeguarding experience
    • Understanding of NHS management responsibilities of consultants
    • Ability to work in a team with professional colleagues across disciplines
    • Experience of supervising junior staff and relevant staff in other disciplines
    • Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses
    • IT and computing skills
    • Previous participation in a management role
    • Membership of appropriate professional societies
  • Knowledge
    • Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and their relatives in all disciplines
    • Ability to lead the development of services and promote best practice among colleagues
    • Evidence of the development of leadership within the work environment
  • Experience
    • CCT and/or inclusion on the Specialist Register of GMC or within 6 months of completion of training at the date of interview
    • Specialist experience in one or more particular areas
