Job overview
We are looking to recruit a Bio-Skills Laboratory Co-Ordinator to work 30 hours per week. The role is primarily Monday - Friday but does involve weekend working.
This role covers a wide range of duties relating to the co-ordination and running of cadaveric workshops within the Bioskills Laboratory.
It includes both technical and clerical duties.
Providing efficient and accurate support to Wrightington Consultants, other Trust colleagues and Industry Partners.
A key aspect of this role is the ability to work in an emotionally challenging environment with the ability to handle prosected human cadaveric specimens.
With a responsibility to uphold the legal regulations as set out by the Human Tissue Authority
Main duties of the job
This role covers a wide range of duties associated with the supervision of the Bioskills Lab.
There are aspects of this role that will involve the management and physical handling of prosected human cadaveric tissue which some may find emotionally challenging, this includes the removal and cleaning of bodily fluids and tissue.
Exposure to unpleasant odours and visually upsetting scenes.
Recording of information is a key part of this role.
Maintaining accurate records and some data entry for multiple databases will be a key role within the post holders’ duties to support statutory compliance with the Human Tissue Authority (HTA), Governance and other relevant quality standards.
Maintain HTS statutory documentation relating to cadaver information and records, including processing movement of cadavers from receipt to disposal.
Ensure accurate completion of all documentation and records, participate fully in all compliance audits and produce compliance reports as required.

Responsibleforcrossreferencingpaperworkrelatingtocadaverictissue, checkingserial numbers correlate to specimens and infectious diseases screening checks have been carried out and are acceptable for lab use.
- Respond quickly and appropriately to any lab misuse or accidents.
To provide efficient and accurate support to Wrightington Consultants and doctors.
Responsible for ensuring equipment used by lab attendees is done so appropriately and with care.
- Planning and Organisational Duties
- To be able to plan and priorities in line with service demands whilst assisting colleagues to meet departmental requirements associated with HTA Compliance, Governance and other Quality Standards and targets relating to service provision.
- Actively promote and support good practice within the Bio-Skills laboratory and maintain compliance with local standard operating procedures.
Ensuring visitors do not breach HTA or local SOP guidelines.
- Observing and recording highly sensitive information during cadaveric workshop activity.
Being available to meet with reps, consultants and other lab users to plan workshops, eg: arranging access for set-up, making up instrument trays, calculating correct specimen thawing times.
- Communications and Key Working Relationships
- Maintain daily contact with varying disciplines of staff both external and internal to the Trust.
- Use various methods of communication – written, email, telephone and scanning to facilitate service provision.
- Develop and maintain relationships with industry partners to aid the running of laboratory workshops.
- Report any process or system failures through to the line manager. Report any incidents via Datix and submit to line manager.
- Ensure accurate recording of information and related data onto required databases. Accurate interpretation of PAS and HIS information if required.
- Ensure all laboratory equipment is fit for purpose, reporting any issues to line manager. To alert line manager and relevant colleagues to shortages of supplies and services
Responsibility for Finance
- Order laboratory consumables via the NHS Supplies website in accordance with departmental budgets.
- Ensure correct waste streams are used to support the Trust waste policies
Responsibility for Human Resources
- Comply with trust policies and procedures including the Code of Conduct and to ensure there is a clear awareness of how reporting procedures ae managed and implemented within their own area of work / responsibility.
- To participate in own personal development and develop a route planner in order to maintain and achieve sustained progression in the role.
Responsibility for Teaching
- To be involved in any job-related training to maintain quality standards including e-mandatory training.
- To have a good understanding of the trust information systems.
- To maintain personal administration competency and professionalism by following recognised professional routes and attending courses where appropriate
You will be openly expected to share knowledge and information with colleagues.
Qualifications
- A-Level / NVQ / Level 3 qualification in science related subject ie; Biology, as good understanding of human anatomy is required.
- IT related qualifications
Experience
- Ability to follow established local and trust Standard Operating Procedures, Risk Assessments and Protocols.
- Experience in reviewing and updating local SOP’s.
- Demonstrable competency in maintaining confidentiality, data protection, GDPR
- Good working knowledge of Health and Safety.
- Previous laboratory or mortuary experience, under HTA licence.
- Worked in a hospital theatre setting.
Skills
- I. T- working knowledge of MS office eg: Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point
- Ability to fulfil physical aspects of the role, including frequent lifting and handling of instruments and materials.
Moving, walking reaching using steps, pushing trolleys and distributing boxes.
- Manual dexterity: ability to safely and carefully handle micro-instruments, assist consultants with pre-dissection, holding nerves/ tendons/ vessels.
- Attention to detail i. e. when cleaning instruments all tissue is removed.
- Ability to interpret and accurately process data and information as required.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge
- Working knowledge of the Human Tissue Authority standards and guidelines.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy
- Additional
- Ability to remain composed in challenging situations, ie exposure to offensive smells, presence of bodily fluids, prosected cut-off points and exposed anatomical structures.
- Lone working – ability to organise and prioritise own workload, working with direction and supervision from the upper limb education manager.
Able to work with frequent interruptions and in a busy environment.
- Able to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service. Early starts, late finishes and some weekend work required.
- Ability to integrate well with people from all disciplines including consultants, surgeons, industry reps and domestic assistants
- Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i. e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation
