We have funding for 3 Specialty Doctor positions in Gastroenterology. This post is suitable for an experienced Gastroenterology Middle Grade or IMT3 doctor looking to gain further experience in Gastroenterology. The postholder will provide 3-4 service endoscopy lists and/or be provided with a training endoscopy list according to experience, also with 2-3 supervised outpatient clinics depending on experience. Support of the Gastroenterology ward will be rotated primarily in the afternoons by facilitating the junior team in terms of patient management and procedures. Support for the Gastroenterology on call in terms of consultations and inpatient endoscopy lists will also be rotated between the posts. Time will be available for audit/research and one session for patient or service-related administration work.

Three posts are available, and these duties will be timetabled along with the established 2 Deanery gastroenterology registrars, 1 Specialty Doctor in Gastroenterology and 1 Gastroenterology advanced nurse practitioner to provide seamless support for the on call and inpatient services. Participation in the medical registrar on call rota can be considered subject to negotiation and experience. The post-holder will also be committed to supporting the weekly journal club and medical on-call rota or Gastroenterology on-call rota depending on clinical experience.

Main duties of the job

Clinical activity will be under the supervision of Dr Prasad (Clinical Lead Endoscopy) and Dr Keld (Clinical Director). The post holder is expected to:

  • Have and maintain full registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Share in the cohesive, professional and patient centred approach of the existing department.
  • Maintain continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
  • Integrate within, motivate and provide professional lead in a ward team.
  • Liaise, communicate and co-operate with the Lead Clinicians, Managers and relevant colleagues.

The post holder is expected to have the following skills and attributes:

  • A wide experience in both outpatient and inpatient general gastroenterology and general medicine.
  • Experience and training in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians.
  • Experience and interest in teaching.
  • An appreciation and understanding of the role of management in the modern NHS.
  • Evidence of engaging with clinical governance including audit.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Medical Degree.
  • Full MRCP or equivalent.
  • Minimum four years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis).
  • Awareness of Endoscopy services at WWL.

Experience

  • Need to be independent in endoscopy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and co-ordinate safely.
  • JAG accreditation sign off for colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy.
  • Experience in ERCP and emergency endoscopy.

Skills

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge

  • Good knowledge of hospital policies and procedures.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration. This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.
