Principal Transport Consultant in Southampton

About your role…

We have a new opportunity for a Principal (or Senior) Transport Consultant to join WSP's Liveable Places team. The role is based out of our Southampton office, with hybrid working allowing for a mix of home and in-office working.

WSP's Liveable Places team work with a wide range of local authority & private clients from across the UK to help them achieve their place making ambitions. As a Principal or Senior Consultant within the team you will take the lead on delivering a wide range of schemes from concept to delivery - including public realm, active travel, traffic engineering, road safety, parking, traffic signals and pedestrian / traffic modelling.

As a Principal Transport Consultant within our Liveable Places team, your responsibilities will include:

• Acting as Designer & Project Manager on a wide range of projects delivering better sustainable transport routes and public realm in urban and rural settings
• Work directly with our clients to achieve their sustainable transport needs
• Prepare and review reports, drawings, schedules and other documents in accordance with appropriate design standards and guidance including LTN 1/20, LTN 1/24, Traffic Signs Manual, MfS, MfS 2, DMRB and CDM 2015
• Stay informed about industry trends and best practice
• Oversee projects’ budget and financial performance
• Undertake technical review and checking of design deliverables within the team
• Work collaboratively with the Liveable Places team and our colleagues in the wider Mobility team and the wider WSP business to achieve our aims and objectives

The Liveable Places team are based in offices across the country with over 200 staff, currently making up the team and with further growth planned. We enjoy our work and are exceptionally enthusiastic people who are great at what we do. Our Southampton team consists of 13 friendly and collaborative staff members who work closely with a broad range of clients, including National Highways, West Sussex County Council, East Sussex County Council, Gloucestershire County Council, Wokingham Borough Council, BCP Council and Somerset Council. Drawing on our collective expertise, we deliver a variety of schemes such as active travel initiatives, bus priority measures, traffic signal improvements, road safety projects, parking solutions, and enhancements to the public realm. Our approach is rooted in partnership and a shared commitment to making communities more accessible, sustainable, and vibrant.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

• A civil engineering, transport engineering or transport planning degree or equivalent experience
• Knowledge of current transport policy and standards
• Experience and interest in supporting work winning activities and supporting the growth of our Liveable Places team
• Proven track record in project management and financial control
• Passion for mentoring and developing talent
• Transport, road safety, parking or traffic engineering experience
