Role Summary
Group Leader and Senior Mine Waste Engineer (UK/Ireland) reporting to Head of Mining (Europe). Dual role: provide leadership to a growing team of 40+ professionals and deliver senior-level geotechnical expertise to support expanding mine waste business.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership to mine waste technical staff, strategic direction, business development, and operational growth.
- Promote safety-first culture, identify and manage safety risks, and ensure adherence to protocols.
- Manage and develop employees: set objectives, provide feedback, conduct performance reviews.
- Partner with senior colleagues in business development: build client relationships, proposal preparation, project positioning.
- Foster collaborative, positive team environment, encouraging innovation and continuous improvement.
- Work closely with senior management to align operations with strategic priorities.
- Lead or manage large, complex, multidisciplinary projects, delivering high-quality work on time and within budget.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders: mine operators, regulatory authorities, contractors.
- Prepare and review technical proposals and design work packages in response to client requirements.
- Coach and mentor junior and intermediate staff to support career growth.
- Advocate for Inclusion and Belonging, uphold WSP’s Guiding Principles.
- Direct geotechnical and mine waste-management projects: site investigation, monitoring, laboratory testing, design, construction, analysis, dam safety inspections.
- Direct and review geotechnical analyses with focus on soil mechanics, provide expertise within area of specialisation.
- Manage quality assurance and risk during design work, include critical review of technical outputs.
- Oversee geotechnical analyses and risk assessments to ensure structural integrity and stability of tailings facilities.
Qualifications
- Relevant post-degree experience in consulting engineering or mining industry.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Mining or Geological Engineering (Master’s preferred).
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Chartered Geologist (CGeol) in UK or equivalent registration in Ireland.
- Experience in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, with defined technical specialisation.
- Excellent technical writing (reports and proposals), interpersonal communication, emotional intelligence.
- Strong ability to develop and maintain relationships with clients and colleagues.
- Proven success in business development and client relationship management.
- Strong risk management skills, sound engineering judgement, commitment to technical excellence.
- Ability to delegate and manage interdisciplinary project teams.
- Strong leadership and business acumen.
- Self-motivated leader, works collaboratively within diverse team environment.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience: mentoring, reviewing work, managing performance.
- Experience in strategic and business planning.
- Proven capability in financial forecasting and budgeting.
- Adaptability and flexibility to manage priorities, deadlines, change, build effective cross-disciplinary partnerships.
