A little more about your role… WSP's Industry team are looking for a Principal level Electrical Engineer to join our team. We work on projects in process industries with a focus on pharmaceutical and fine chemicals, but get involved with a wide range of other plants too including emerging hydrogen and battery projects. We are a multi-disciplinary process industries design team that has involvement from concept to completion of projects. Core work is basic and detailed stages, but we get involved with all stages from site master planning up to construction completion, providing our own estimates and proposals support in winning work through delivering the designs not only as part of our own multi-disciplinary team, but often integrated with Clients who we work with very closely.

We work on projects of various sizes, often closely integrated with the Client doing cut-and-carve modifications to existing plants as well as designing new facilities on brown/green-field sites. Reporting to the Industry Engineering Director, the role encompasses both hands-on project work as well as discipline and line management roles. We are a relatively small team of Electrical engineers within the industry discipline and have a very open, friendly and collaborative culture underpinned by a strong safety culture which runs throughout the entire business. We have our own in-department design team which provides both CAD support and assistance with engineering activities. Our team works across several sectors within industry giving a great opportunity for development and learning. In addition, we also work closely with colleagues in other divisions both in the UK and abroad and often share work giving an even wider breadth to the possible experiences available.

A lot of our clients are top-tier COMAH sites giving great exposure to unique challenges and working with very professional Clients who value safety and experience of working in hazardous environments. One of our core strengths is the ability to take on new challenges as the experience gained across the various sectors we work in prepares us well for the regular new challenges we come across.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading electrical discipline within industry including line management of sub-team.
  • Input to schedule and preparation of man-hour estimates/control and monitoring.
  • Controlling discipline hours budget and cost of works on allocated project.
  • Carrying out Electrical design work typically from 11kV substation, through LV switchboards, distribution, MCC’s, Lighting, small power, lightning protection and associated electrical services such as fire alarms, PA systems.
  • Input into package plant specifications.
  • Preparing Installation Specification and contract schedules.
  • Leading CAD team in production of electrical drawings.
  • Approving and checking of all Electrical design work on allocated projects.
  • Preparing enquiries and technical bid analysis.
  • Technical liaison with Suppliers, Package Vendors and Sub-contractors.
  • Preparation of Design Safety Reviews and designer risk assessments.

Qualifications:

  • Good interpersonal skills and able to work as part of a multi-discipline team.
  • Versatile, reliable and resourceful – it’s about being the right person – we can help fill any knowledge or experience gaps.
  • Customer focus, commitment to quality management and problem solving.
  • Experience of 11k V/LV.
  • Experience in electrical engineering design on capital projects.
  • Experience of motor controls including variable speed drives.
  • Experience of electrical design in ATEX hazardous areas.
  • Ability to travel within the UK for site and supplier visits.
  • Degree qualified, Chartered Engineer in electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in design of one or more of our key sectors.
  • Experience of 11k V/LV fault level calculations and protection studies.
  • Experience of having worked within a contracting organisation.
