About your role

We are seeking a Senior or Principal Consultant to join our Transport & Mobility division and support our growing focus on Freight and Logistics. The role could be based from any of our UK offices, with hybrid working allowing for a mix of in‑office and home working.

You will lead the day‑to‑day technical transport planning input across a wide range of freight and logistics projects, taking on project management and leadership responsibilities where appropriate, potentially spanning one or more of the following areas:

  • Freight policy and strategy – supporting clients to develop robust evidence bases and providing advice aligned with national, regional and local policy frameworks.
  • Freight infrastructure – assisting with studies and business cases to improve the freight system, including key freight routes, lorry parking and amenities, and rail freight terminals.
  • Urban freight – helping clients enable efficient last‑mile operations while balancing placemaking, highway safety and public realm priorities.
  • Logistics planning – supporting the design and implementation of optimised logistics operations in complex or specialist environments, such as healthcare facilities and major infrastructure projects.
  • Freight decarbonisation – supporting policymakers, infrastructure investors and operators in the transition to zero‑emission freight and logistics fleets.

You will lead transport planning inputs for small‑to‑medium scale projects and work closely with senior colleagues on larger, multi‑disciplinary schemes. We will support you to build your professional network, broaden your project experience, and continue to develop your technical and leadership capability. You will also have the opportunity to mentor our Early Career Professionals, supporting their development while ensuring high‑quality project delivery.

Your Team

We are a small, friendly and progressive team, bringing together a broad mix of grades, disciplines and backgrounds, with a strong culture of collaboration and mentorship. The Freight and Logistics team sits within WSP's wider Transport & Mobility business, working across the UK to support public and private sector clients. Our work spans Local and Combined Authorities, national government (including DfT and National Highways), Network Rail, city regions, national frameworks, and freight operators and developers.

We focus on shaping the future of freight, developing policies, strategies and solutions that recognise freight as a vital user of the transport network and a critical enabler of businesses, communities and everyday life. Our work spans early concepts through to delivery—providing high‑level advice on freight planning, feasibility, policy development and investable business cases that support resilient, efficient and sustainable freight movement.

Our projects cover the full breadth of freight and logistics, including logistics infrastructure (freight corridors, lorry parking, terminals and ports), freight decarbonisation (vehicles and supporting infrastructure), urban logistics (kerbside management, last‑mile solutions, modal shift), and logistics planning (construction logistics, operational concepts, masterplanning and strategy). We invest in your development, offering a dedicated business mentor, access to structured internal CPD, and full support through your Chartership journey (where applicable).

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of Freight and Logistics projects, and experience in the sector or in a public sector freight role.
  • Technical skills relevant to the delivery of freight and logistics projects, such as logistics data analysis and freight transport planning, fleet decarbonisation and urban/last mile logistics.
  • Good communication skills and the confidence to lead discussions with Clients, members of our project teams, co‑professionals and other project stakeholders.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Project management (e.g. budget planning, resource planning, invoicing) on small to medium scale projects.
  • Experience of preparing bids.
  • Ability to share knowledge and mentor others, in particular Early Career Professional colleagues, on your areas of technical expertise.
  • Ability to collaborate with our wider teams to support growth and delivery of projects.
  • An interest / passion for freight transport and transport innovation.

We positively encourage applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, pregnancy or maternity/paternity. As a Disability Confident leader, we will interview all disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria, please let us know if you require any workplace adjustments in support of your application.
