A little more about your role… WSP are seeking an enthusiastic and talented Technical Director to join the Roads team based in Scotland & North East. This is a senior role in the business, responsible for project delivery, technical excellence, design management and growing client relationships. The role will be fast paced and agile, with responsibility for the delivery of large complex projects or frameworks from our extensive Roads portfolio. You will have client facing responsibilities, working with existing clients or building new relationships to grow our market share from our existing routes to market.

The role will involve:

  • Taking responsibility for the management and leadership of technical project teams to deliver project scope.
  • Fulfilling the role of Design Manager on complex, multi-disciplinary programmes of work.
  • Providing technical leadership within the Liverpool office, supporting with technical audits and the development of junior team members.
  • Visible leadership of health safety and wellbeing.
  • Overseeing the technical preparation, review and checking of deliverables.
  • Managing project risk and opportunity to ensure effective coordination of multi-disciplinary working.
  • Managing resources effectively and efficiently to meet fluctuating workloads.
  • Working with Clients and design teams to deliver compliant designs on time and within budget meeting CDM, QA and technical review requirements.
  • Participating in tender bids and business development opportunities as they arise.
  • Developing relationships with other WSP teams to utilise additional resources required.
  • Responsibility for setting the technical leadership tone in the office, ensuring a fair, supportive and passionate culture.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

  • Experience in the leadership of large technical teams.
  • Experience in technical delivery leadership and financial control of major programmes of work in the Roads sector.
  • Proven track record in the role of Design Manager on major Roads programmes including the integration of multi-disciplinary designs and the associated quality audits.
  • A broad range of project experience, both within civil engineering discipline and multi-disciplinary projects, focusing on highways.
  • Experienced in the technical and financial leadership of Design and Build contracts.
  • The ability to use, direct and check the design outputs created in relevant software’s including but not limited to Autodesk Civils 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, and/or PDS.
  • Demonstrate ability to improve, motivate and encourage others, lead and implement change programmes, inspiring colleagues and drive an innovative and supportive culture.
  • Commercial and strategic capability with a demonstrable track record in having identified and subsequently delivered new business opportunities.
  • Proactively manages change on tasks/projects, clearly communicating potential impacts on programme, cost, and quality.
  • Influential and persuasive internally and externally, encourages open dialogue and feedback.
  • A thorough understanding and application of the relevant design codes such as the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, Local Authority design guidance and are well versed in the preparation of drawings for contract documentation and technical approvals including the application of departures from standard.
  • Chartered Civil Engineer with the ICE of CIHT with extensive post professional qualification experience. Fellowship status or working towards Fellowship with demonstrable progress.
  • Experience of complying with Designers Duties under CDM regulations.
