WSP invites applications for this role. About the Role: WSP's Local Government team has a vacancy for a Principal Structural Engineer based in our central Exeter office, with hybrid working. As a Principal Engineer, you will support local authority clients across the Southwest, working on a varied bridge stock and extensive programme of design, assessment and inspection schemes.
Responsibilities include:
- Designing new and replacement bridges and retaining walls, and inspecting, assessing, repairing and strengthening existing structures.
- Taking projects through the entire life cycle—from inception to construction.
- Acting as Technical Lead and Project Manager for your portfolio, ensuring compliance and delivery on time and within budget.
- Preparing and reviewing reports, calculations, drawings, schedules, health and safety risk assessments, feasibility studies and other documents.
- Working collaboratively and resolving technical and commercial issues.
- Writing proposals and managing commercial position on projects.
- Coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and clients to deliver projects.
- Undertaking site work for construction supervision, surveys and inspections.
- Providing line management and support development of junior members.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer.
- Passion for projects that make a real difference to local communities.
- Self-aware approach to maintaining high standards and safe practices.
- Practical knowledge and experience of bridge design, maintenance, strengthening, assessment, inspection and supervision.
- Project management experience of bridge projects.
- Proven knowledge of DMRB and MCHW.
- Experience of using Eurocodes in bridge design.
- Experience with steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete bridge structures and masonry arch structures.
- Experience with grillage, space frame and finite element analysis software.
