Assistant Environmental Clerk of Works

Role Overview

WSP has a large, highly experienced and friendly Environmental team involved in a diverse range of multi‑disciplinary projects across the UK for both private and public clients. The team prides itself on integrated support, working alongside in‑house specialists to deliver commercially balanced, innovative and integrated solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Field based – visit construction sites across a variety of industries (windfarm, grid connection, underground cabling, sub‑sea cabling, etc.) to monitor adherence to environmental legislation.
  • Carry out/support site inspections and audits of construction works against planning conditions and associated documents (e.g. Construction Environmental Management Plan).
  • Provide guidance and solutions to contractors and clients on environmental compliance and best practice methods.
  • Act as a key point of contact, working closely with other disciplines (ecologists, hydrologists, archaeologists, engineers) to provide an integrated environmental service.
  • Liaise with clients, regulatory bodies and subcontractors on environmental management practices.
  • Support operation and design teams on environmental compliance and project‑specific mitigation measures.
  • Deliver toolbox talks and onsite environmental guidance to contractors.
  • Work away from home 3 weeks out of 4 as required.
  • Support site teams on incident investigation and reporting.
  • Compile weekly site reports and support team management with administration tasks.

Qualifications

  • An Environmental Science or Environmental Management Degree.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant wildlife legislation.
  • Experience monitoring construction activities in line with best practice guidance from small to large projects.
  • Ability to work under time pressure to resolve emerging environmental issues on site.
  • Membership of a professional body.
  • A CSCS card (or in the process of gaining one).
  • Willingness to travel to site and between project locations regularly (a suitable vehicle will be provided).
  • Understanding of environmental management in a construction context.
  • Understanding of environmental impact assessment legislation, policy and guidance.
  • Understanding of Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations (EASR) and pollution prevention.
  • Highly organised, pragmatic, solutions‑driven, pro‑active and reliable approach.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, confident in communicating with clients and peers.
