WSP is a leading professional services firm providing strategic advisory, engineering and design services. WSP UK is recruiting an experienced solicitor to support Earth and Environment sectors, including mining and other earth-related services. A self-starter who can work with senior internal stakeholders and external parties, the successful candidate will manage contractual and commercial risk, provide commercially oriented legal advice, and support growth across the Earth and Environment business lines.

A Little More About Your Role

  • Work closely with the Earth and Environment business teams to embed a culture of contractual and commercial risk management, mitigation and regulatory compliance.
  • Reviewing and negotiating contractual documentation relevant to the earth, mining and environment sectors, including consultancy agreements, project contracts, joint venture and teaming agreements, framework agreements, collateral warranties, deeds of novation, reliance letters, non-disclosure agreements, letters of intent, and sub-consultancy agreements.
  • Carrying out legal reviews to minimise impacts on WSP’s working capital and support timely contract negotiations.
  • Ensure corporate governance is maintained in relation to contract reviews and approvals for bids and contracts.
  • Provide advice on tenders and bid documentation to identify and address risk and promote competition.
  • Support and advise the business in the contract delivery phase to maximise revenue, minimise risk and support contract management.
  • Liaise with internal disciplines, bid teams, commercial and operations directors and the finance function.
  • Update the business on relevant legal developments in environmental and earth-related space; deliver legal training as required.
  • Contribute to the organisation and dissemination of legal know-how within the WSP UK Legal team and to lessons learned for the wider business.
  • Operate as a team player and collaborate with colleagues at all times.

There is an expectation that the successful candidate will familiarise themselves with WSP’s health and safety arrangements and guidance relevant to their activities and meet duties outlined in GNHS020 – Competencies, Roles and Responsibilities.

What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate

The successful candidate will be a solicitor qualified in England & Wales with post-qualification experience in reviewing and advising on contractual matters in the engineering and construction sector. In-house experience at an engineering consultancy or contractor is preferable. Experience of complex contracting including joint ventures is desirable. The candidate should be able to work autonomously while contributing knowledge to the wider legal team. Additional requirements include:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.
  • Qualified solicitor or barrister in England and Wales.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work without supervision under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Proactive with the ability to prioritise competing business demands.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
