WSP has an opportunity for an experienced Senior to Associate Mechanical Engineer in our Birmingham office, focusing on the Data Centre sector with our Mission Critical Facilities team. You will have the opportunity to work on some of the most exciting and technically challenging projects within this fast-paced sector. WSP is currently involved in numerous projects, working with Colocation Providers, End Users and Enterprise clients, both within the UK and across EMEA.
Little More About Your Role…
- Support the team in developing designs for mechanical distribution systems from CHW, HVAC, Fuel to LTHW.
- Provide advice to clients regarding mechanical systems/requirements available to meet their business needs.
- Lead the design of data centre mechanical systems and equipment.
- Provide written reports of system options in the form of design development notes.
- Produce technical specifications for mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and client requirements.
- Ensure coordination with other disciplines including Architect and Structural engineers.
- Produce calculations, technical/equipment specification documentation for tender.
- Monitor installation of designed equipment/systems to ensure compliance with employers’ requirements, design specifications and all relevant safety codes.
Operational responsibilities
- Able to work using their own initiative with minimal supervision on all technical aspects of their discipline or have specific specialist experience applicable to the role.
- Able to work under the clear direction of the client and interpret the needs of the project as a whole to meet the full delivery needs.
- Work in a joint leadership capacity within a mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) discipline team providing design and technical advice in a WSP project manager capacity on a wide range of projects.
- Complete the detailed designs of mission critical facilities and all mechanical systems associated to data centres.
- Consider the feasibility of the project specific to the discipline and lead the overall feasibility study for the project.
- Take responsibility for and direct others in the production of detailed and performance specification for the discipline subject to review by colleagues prior to issue.
- Review the detailed design programme and ensure that sufficient resource is available to complete the works.

You will be based in our award winning Birmingham office at The Mailbox, offering easy commuting options and amenities just around the corner. Our growing Birmingham team consists of 50 plus MEP engineers. You will be working closely with these likeminded individuals on exciting and challenging Building Services MEP projects across healthcare, commercial offices, residential, industry, defense and sports & leisure. The team will be supported by local, regional and international experts. WSP cares about your career development and offers mentorship and training aligned with your aspirations.
What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate
- Knowledge and experience in designing mechanical systems for data centres.
- Chartered status (or working towards Chartered status) with CIBSE or IMechE or equivalent experience.
- Technical MEP knowledge of relevant UK and EU regulations, design guides, etc.
- Have an understanding of the Uptime Institute Tier Classification System.
- Flexible approach to meet the demands of projects.
- Have working understanding of TAS of IES and Hevacomp to allow the allocation / direction of work on projects.
- Have understanding of working with RevitMEP or other 3D design software to allow the allocation / direction of work on projects.
- Have working knowledge of AutoCAD to allow the allocation / direction of work on projects.
- Able to work as part of a team as well as ability to effectively lead, direct and mentor individuals within and outside of the WSP team.
