A little more about your role… The Roads team is seeking a Principal Engineer with extensive postgraduate experience in the design and project management of road schemes and active travel schemes to work in our Belfast office. The team is growing and offers excellent opportunities for the right candidate.

The successful candidate will lead and help grow a team undertaking concept, preliminary and detailed designs for major road schemes including the A5WTC, N/M20 Cork to Limerick Road Improvement Scheme, public transport schemes and active travel schemes for the National Transport Authority and Local Authorities. The candidate will be involved in the project management and technical delivery of schemes from inception through to the handover of the completed schemes to the clients. This role will primarily be client-facing and the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of delivery of schemes in either the local, regional or national transport arena.

Managing projects to ensure coordination and compatibility of multi-disciplinary inputs on projects of varying scale, complexity and value. Liaising with our clients, developing strong trusted relationships, proactively managing their expectations and comprehensively advising them.

  • Undertake project technical lead and reviewer roles
  • Using your technical ability and experience to develop our staff
  • Prepare fee proposals and manage budgets for individual projects.
  • Be responsible for the development and delivery of discrete and overall project solutions;
  • Lead and manage other staff members in the delivery of design drawings, standard construction details, specifications and bill of quantities, supporting the preparation of tender packages;
  • Responsible for compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation and in-house quality assurance standards/processes;

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

  • A degree in Civil Engineering or another appropriate subject.
  • Incorporated or Chartered Status (AMIEI/MIEI or equivalent)
  • Project management and technical delivery lead of Road or Public Transport/Active Travel schemes, with experience of Transport Infrastructure Ireland/National Transport Authority/Local Authority procedures essential.
  • Experience of contract document preparation or contract administration/site supervision using Public Works Contracts
  • A chartered member of a relevant engineering technical institution.
  • Experience or knowledge of alignment and drainage design software packages such as Civil3D/Open Roads and WinDes preferred, but not essential.
  • Good communication, client management and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Excellent IT skills including MS Projects.
  • A thorough understanding and application of current design standards including; Urban Street and/or Active Travel Design (i.e. Design Manual for Urban Roads and Streets - DMURS, The Traffic Signs Manual, the Cycle Design Manual etc.), Highway Geometric Design (i.e. Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) Publications) and also TII and NTA Project Management Guidelines;
  • Strong stakeholder management experience
