WSP is a leading global engineering and professional services firm. We are seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer (or Engineering Geologist) to join our Belfast office. This role is available on a full‑time or part‑time basis and covers a wide range of sectors, including infrastructure, transport, energy and water.
As a principal member of the Geotechnical team you will develop high‑quality technical reports, provide expert advice to clients and contractors, and manage project delivery in accordance with industry best practice. Your responsibilities will include:
- Produce professional, technically competent reports and liaise with specialists and clients across diverse sectors.
- Effectively manage and deliver project work, ensuring robust project financial management.
- Assist in managing team resources and allocation of appropriate project staff.
- Lead, motivate, mentor and develop professional staff.
- Provide comprehensive support for all aspects of project delivery, including client liaison, contractors, sub‑consultants, statutory body consultation and quality control.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Technical expertise in geotechnical engineering or engineering geology with a deep understanding of the underlying principles.
- Consultancy experience with strong commercial awareness and established relationships with clients and contractors.
- Chartered professional status with significant post‑qualification experience.
- Demonstrated experience delivering geotechnical, engineering geology and ground engineering projects, preparing technical reports to a high standard.
- Capability to influence contract specifications and understand client requirements.
- Experience leading or being part of effective delivery teams managing projects from inception to construction.
- Excellent report‑writing, client liaison and communication skills.
- Proven experience in desk studies, designing, procuring and supervising Ground Investigations (GIs), and checking GIs and Geotechnical Design Reports in compliance with Eurocode 7 Part 1.
- Working knowledge of Eurocode 7, UK annex design codes, ground investigation and construction contracts and specifications.
- Proficiency in a range of geotechnical software for design of civil engineering projects, including deep and shallow foundations, pile group analysis, embedded and gravity retaining walls, earthworks/slope stability and reinforced earthworks.
- Strong ability to critically evaluate and check the work of others—drawings, calculations, reports.
