We are seeking a Principal Consultant to join our Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Team in London. You will be responsible for the management and delivery of archaeology projects in the South East of the country, principally fieldwork projects, and will play a key role in our heritage team’s development. The position requires a combination of high‑level technical expertise in archaeology and heritage, and commercial and business acumen. You will be expected to lead fieldwork projects from planning and consent applications to the delivery of bespoke archaeological strategies and works for developments and infrastructure. Much of your work will need to withstand the test of public inquiry. Preferably, you have a specialism or area of knowledge that contributes to the development of the team and our wider business. You will have a strong awareness of health and safety and risk management, particularly on fieldwork projects.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and assure the work of WSP‑approved fieldwork subcontractors, both on‑site and in the technical review of deliverables, including RAMS.
- Prepare competitive tenders and design the scope and methodology for archaeological fieldwork in accordance with WSP health and safety protocols and requirements.
- Create or contribute to archaeological desk‑based assessment.
- Undertake stakeholder, curator, and client liaison.
Qualifications
- Experience of archaeological fieldwork project management (project, financial and staff management).
- Robust knowledge of Irish archaeology and history and full knowledge of the planning process and relevant environmental / heritage legislation and guidance.
- Experience in most or all of the following areas: heritage and planning, masterplanning, heritage conservation, heritage‑led regeneration, recreation and tourism, heritage sustainability masterplanning, placemaking, multi‑disciplinary collaboration, and business development.
- Excellent writing, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Highly motivated, conscientious and efficient with the ability to meet deadlines and budgets in a busy consultancy environment.
