A Senior Safety Consultant will provide safety engineering and assurance services to rail engineering projects, enhancing safety protocols, risk assessment methodologies, and overall project quality. The role includes mentoring junior consultants and may involve business development activities such as proposal writing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading complex rail safety engineering and assurance services to engineering projects, applying methods and tools aligned with key standards such as EN50126, EN50129, IEC 61508, CSM-RA and the Railways Interoperability Regulations (RIR).
  • Leading certification and authorisation projects, such as new railway stations, through the assessment of National Technical Specification Notices (NTSNs), Infrastructure and PRM, and National Technical Rules (NTRs), such as GIRT7020 and GIRT7073.
  • Leading the bidding, winning, and successful delivery of complex commercially viable projects, collaborating with clients to understand their objectives and desired outcomes for each project.
  • Contributing to a diverse range of exciting projects, including safety assurance management, safety approvals, and CSM work for major infrastructure projects such as the National Train Control Centre in Dublin, Crewe Hub remodelling, and East Coast Mainline.
  • Providing support to contractors in completing CSM and approvals for station and civil works.
  • Working on global projects spanning Australia, the US, Canada, Asia and the Middle East, with the ability to contribute from the UK without the necessity of travel.
  • Demonstrating flexibility by effectively managing multiple activities and proactively balancing workload across different projects and customers.
  • Leading interactive workshops with clients and stakeholders.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience in delivering safety engineering and assurance services to rail projects, utilising methods and tools aligned with standards such as CSM-RA and RIR.
  • Background in risk management, systems engineering, safety engineering and/or interoperability.
  • Ideally with a civil engineering background.
  • Prior experience in major rail infrastructure projects, especially within the UK or consultancy sector.
  • Experience in railway station projects, track and civil works, gauging and structure assessments.
  • Exceptional organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple activities and proactively prioritise workload.
  • Support business development efforts by writing proposals, developing client relationships, and engaging with industry stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience in cyber security is noted but not essential for this role.
