A little more about your role… As an Assistant Engineer within the Asset Consultancy Team, you will support Engineers, Hydraulic Modellers and Asset Planners in the delivery of potable water infrastructure projects. You will contribute to accurate, efficient project delivery for internal and external clients, including UK Utilities, private developers and local authorities. In this role, you will develop strong technical foundations, gain hands‑on experience across a wide range of water‑sector activities, and support the creation of innovative engineering solutions. You will be a proactive, enthusiastic and collaborative member of the team, keen to learn and grow professionally.

A typical week would include (but not be limited to):

  • Assisting in the delivery of feasibility studies and options development for potable water (infrastructure and/or non‑infrastructure) projects.
  • Supporting hydraulic modelling tasks such as network model builds, upgrades, calibration, operational response assessments and mains flushing programme development.
  • Contributing to asset risk prioritisation modelling and helping collate inputs for analysis.
  • Supporting water quality modelling activities, option assessments, and the development of technical solutions.
  • Helping undertake growth studies and network capacity checks.
  • Working with senior team members to ensure projects meet client expectations for quality, time and budget.
  • Taking responsibility for your own continuing professional development, supported by your People Manager and senior colleagues, and assisting with basic tasks or knowledge sharing for junior team members where appropriate.
  • Operating in accordance with corporate health, safety, environmental and quality standards, as well as associated client requirements.
  • Helping maintain project‑related health and safety strategies, including preparation of risk assessments.
  • Supporting general project delivery activities such as data analysis, report preparation, and document control.

Successful candidates will become part of a respected and ambitious team, with excellent opportunities for technical and professional growth. You will work as part of an award‑winning water team within a larger team of over 600 professionals across the UK, supported by our Global Water Team. We are currently engaged with an expanding portfolio of clients, including Severn Trent Water, Northern Ireland Water, Welsh Water, Southern Water, Wessex Water, United Utilities, Uisce Éireann, Southern Water, and Scottish Water Horizons.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

  • A relevant degree (or working towards one) in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Engineering or a related discipline, and interest in working toward qualification with an applicable Professional Institution.
  • An interest in Clean Water infrastructure and an understanding of the Water Industry, with some exposure to asset management, hydraulic modelling, or design activities (academic, placement, or early career experience).
  • Good written, verbal and presentation skills, with the ability to work both independently on routine tasks and collaboratively within a project team.
  • Strong IT skills, particularly in MS Office, with enthusiasm for learning specialist tools such as GIS or network modelling software (e.g. InfoWorks WS Pro, Synergi, Epanet).
  • A professional, positive approach and willingness to participate in client‑facing activities as you develop in the role.

We have multiple roles to fulfil and therefore can consider a range of skills and experience, to collectively strengthen our team’s capacity and technical and applied project management capabilities.
