WSP Solicitors is seeking an exceptional Head of Company Commercial to lead and grow our ambitious Company Commercial department.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for an experienced corporate/commercial lawyer to step into a leadership role within an established, forward‑thinking Gloucestershire firm.

As a Head of Department you will shape the future of the department, driving its strategy, mentoring future talent, expanding our client base, and ensuring the delivery of exceptional legal services that reflect WSP’s commitment to making life less complicated for our clients.

Responsibilities

  • Departmental Leadership & Strategy
  • Setting and delivering the strategic vision for the Company Commercial department in alignment with the firm’s wider growth plans.
  • Leading, motivating, and nurturing a team of solicitors, trainees, and support staff.
  • Implementing robust workflows, quality standards, and compliance processes.
  • Client Advisory & Complex Work
  • Managing your own high-quality caseload including M&A, shareholder agreements, commercial contracts, corporate restructuring, joint ventures, and governance matters.
  • Acting as a trusted advisor to SMEs, owner-managed businesses, and high‑value commercial clients across Gloucestershire and beyond.
  • Ensuring exceptional service delivery that strengthens WSP’s reputation for clarity, approachability, and expertise.
  • Business Development & Profile Building
  • Proactively developing new client relationships and nurturing existing ones to drive departmental revenue.
  • Collaborating with the Marketing and BD to identify opportunities, attend networking events, and represent the firm externally.
  • Playing a central role in firm-wide business development initiatives and strategic projects.
  • People Development & Mentoring
  • Supervising junior lawyers, providing continual feedback, and supporting career development through coaching and structured progression paths.
  • Building a collaborative, high‑performing departmental culture.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years PQE in corporate or commercial law

  • A proven track record of business development, client relationship management, and generating new work.
  • Experience mentoring junior lawyers or supervising a team.
