Working as a Clerk of Works as part of a Construction Quality Management (CQM) Team on key School Rebuilding projects with varied levels of complexity on behalf of and in support of the Department for Education. You will be based at the WSP Cambridge office and at the client’s project location in Wisbech according to the needs of the project at any given time. You will have hands‑on experience of working with client teams in a collaborative and integrated manner.
Duties
- Reviewing design, drawings, specifications, employer's requirements, contractor's proposals and other technical and contract documents as necessary.
- Advising on compliance with current Building Regulations, DfE specification compliance and other third‑party accreditation requirements.
- Regularly visiting site to inspect the construction work (a minimum of three visits per site per week from Start on Site until Practical Completion).
- Providing weekly written reports on the quality of construction on site following the site inspections.
- Attending design updates meetings from Contract Award.
- Attending monthly site meetings and any other such meetings as are called for the management of the Contract.
- Attending pre‑handover and handover quality inspections (“Snagging” and “Back snagging”) and preparing and issuing of appropriate schedules and reports.
- Attending End of Defects Liability Period Inspections and preparing and issuing of appropriate schedules and reports.
- Undertaking factory visits for off‑site construction projects.

Qualifications
Technical Knowledge and Experience
- Relevant Construction Professional Status.
- Technical knowledge of construction industry.
- Relevant practical site experience.
- Understanding of Health, Safety and Quality through CDM 2015.
- Understanding of what CDM sets out to achieve.
- Understanding of the CDM “Principle of Prevention”.
Soft Skills
- Effective oral and written communication and engagement skills.
- Confidence to professionally challenge and influence duty holders to ensure compliance with legal and other requirements.
Additional Skills
- Demonstrable capability and experience in Construction Quality Management.
- Hold a relevant degree, or similar higher education qualification.
- Have a minimum of ten years’ experience inspecting public sector or equivalent buildings, including all forms of construction, conservation and listed buildings.
- Ability to demonstrate multidisciplinary design coordination experience and equivalent site monitoring and recording experience to act as the client’s eyes and ears on site.
Specific Requirements for the Role
- Chartered member of a relevant institution for the specialist discipline (e.g., ICE, IStructE, ARB, CIBSE, IMechE, CIOB, etc.).
- Experience with off‑site construction methods (modern methods of construction) and inspection of both factory facilities and on‑site works.
- Familiarity with the latest edition of the Clerk of Works and Site Inspector Handbook, including site diary and reports, trade elements checklists, health and safety checklists.
- Knowledge of the UK BIM Framework and its implementation.
- Familiar with the Building Safety Act, CDM regulations and other Health and Safety legislation to recognise CDM non‑compliance and foreseeable design hazards.
- Knowledge of HSG168 Fire Safety in Construction.
- Conversant with DfE Soft Landings and its implementation.
