What you’ll do:

  • Lead and support fieldwork/site visits and produce written reports for Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), Soil Resource Assessment, and tailored assessments for inclusion in Environmental Statements.
  • Manage data to support technical reporting, provide advice and support to colleagues, and liaise with clients, landowners, contractors, statutory authorities and third parties.
  • Lead and support project delivery within the Ground & Water team; manage projects with appropriate supervision, including bidding, project team management, project delivery, and financial management.
  • Support the growth of the soil team and embed soil understanding across the business by working with colleagues in Ground & Water, Nature Advisory, Landscape, Environmental Planning, and Sustainability Policy & Compliance.
  • Help train junior staff and share knowledge with other environmental disciplines; contribute to business development and work-winning activities.

Team, location and working style:

The role will be largely office-based with periods on-site for training and surveys. WSP has offices across the country; location is flexible with a hybrid approach (working from home and travelling to offices for meetings/project work).

You will be an excellent relationship builder, highly organized, adaptable, and aware of the commercial demands of consultancy work. You should have ambition to support the growth of the team to meet increasing demand for specialist soils scientists.

What we’re looking for:

  • Degree-level qualification in Soil Science, or similar (physical geology, environmental science) with 5–10 years of relevant practical experience.
  • Experience completing Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) surveys, Soil Resource Surveys, Soil Classification, and site supervision during construction works to BSSS competency standards.
  • A solid grounding in Health & Safety procedures (including CDM) for site work.
  • Working knowledge of EIA methodology for Environmental Statements is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience liaising with clients, contractors, planning authorities and stakeholders; excellent communication and report-writing skills.
  • Registered with a relevant professional body (e.g. British Society of Soil Science) and ideally chartered.
  • Current knowledge of UK environmental legislation, construction project implications on agricultural land, and understanding of UK agricultural practice and business issues.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and take ownership of project delivery; working knowledge of applied GIS; full driving license and willingness to work outdoors.
