Rail and Road Fire Risk Assessor (Entry Level – L3 FRA Certificated) WSP – United Kingdom & Ireland

Job Description

At WSP, you will contribute to landmark projects, including HS2 stations, Crossrail, London Underground, Network Rail refurbishment, and road tunnel projects. As part of our dynamic Rail and Road Fire Engineering Team, you will develop fire engineering design from concept through construction, assurance, commissioning, and carry out fire risk assessments and retrofitting solutions.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Process rail infrastructure and road tunnel design and planning
  • Use technical guidance and standards in fire safety for rail, road, and building infrastructure
  • Apply regulatory reforms (Fire Safety Order, CD352 tunnel systems design)
  • Understand building evacuation principles within rail and road environments
  • Assist with fire safety risk assessments and survey systems such as fire alarm and detection (BS 5839 parts 1 and 8), fire suppression, and facilities for firefighter intervention (fire hydrant designs) for compliance
  • Technical knowledge of portable fire suppression (BS 5306) and escape lighting (BS 5266 – part 1)
  • Relevant qualification in fire risk assessment (e.g., PAS 79) not essential
  • General knowledge in Fire Engineering or similar engineering experience (e.g., fire alarm design, building surveying)
  • Ability to understand a brief from the project lead and deliver tasks within time and budget
  • Willingness to learn and grow into a risk assessor role and complete assessments
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients and appreciate their needs
  • Willingness to work away from home and occasionally at night
