A Little More About Your Role

This is a key leadership role, responsible for driving and managing health and safety excellence across all stages of design and construction, encompassing a diverse set of design and site risk on a complex operational site. The successful candidate will be based at our Derby location, but provide day‑to‑day health and safety support and leadership to the project team across all our key project office locations. You will act as a key client and stakeholder contact, ensuring that safety is integrated into every aspect of design and delivery.

Responsibilities and leadership areas include:

  • Leadership: Support the delivery of the leadership teams’ ambition of ‘excellence’ in project health and safety performance; report on project progress of KPIs, key compliance metrics and contract deliverables.
  • Operational Delivery: Communicate project operational/leadership level briefings, reports and updates; lead on client/stakeholder H&S engagement and reporting; manage and deliver project site H&S support, advice, and guidance on site working activity risk management; conduct project site visits/inspections; conduct compliance checks against the standards of site risk assessment completion, CDM, and mandatory training; incident investigation, lessons‑learned capture, fast facts, incident close‑out management; manage and support the delivery of stand‑downs and communications pertinent to the project.
  • Performance Monitoring: Monitor and report on KPIs at project levels, demonstrating performance level in relation to contract goals and targets; monitor project reviews and incident investigations to identify trends and improvement areas.
  • Key Interfaces: Project Leadership Team, client H&S team, WSP Corp UK HSEQ team.

What We Will Be Looking For You to Demonstrate

  • Extensive experience in major scheme health and safety management within construction design and engineering projects.
  • Proven track record of delivering Principal Designer duties under CDM Regulations.
  • Strong leadership and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Excellent knowledge of UK H&S legislation and industry best practices.
  • Ability to produce clear, concise reports and communicate effectively with clients and project teams.
  • Relevant professional qualifications (e.g., NEBOSH Diploma, IOSH Chartered Membership).
  • Successful applications will be required to be security‑cleared prior to appointment.
