We are seeking a Principal engineer with a strong background in design management and project management to lead sustainable transport and public realm improvement projects from inception to completion, primarily in London.
Key Responsibilities
- Design Management: Oversee the design process, ensuring all work meets the highest standards and client requirements. Manage the design team, coordinate with other departments, and ensure timely, on‑budget delivery.
- Project Management: Plan, schedule, budget, and allocate resources for the overall project. Ensure milestones are met and the project is completed on time and within budget.
- Client Liaison: Act as the main point of contact for clients, keeping them informed of progress throughout the project.
- Risk Management: Identify and manage project risks, resolving issues quickly and effectively.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure all design work meets the highest quality standards and resolve any issues promptly.
- Team Leadership: Lead and motivate the design team, ensuring effective and efficient collaboration.
Typical Week Includes
- Prepare highways designs for construction projects and coordinate input from other disciplines.
- Develop drawings, design details, specifications, BoQ, and design calculations.
- Attend client and internal progress meetings and maintain action trackers.
- Liaise with discipline leads, preparing updates to programme schedules and ensuring inter‑dependencies are managed.
- Implement QA/QM procedures, assist with Project Execution Plans, and carry out resulting actions.
- Maintain project commercial risk registers and support preparation of design H&S risk plans and schedules.
- Coordinate inputs from technical disciplines and disseminate project information across teams.
- Coordinate technical decision logs.
- Oversee preparation of fee proposals and change control documents.
- Compile task assignment documents and arrange internal approvals.
- Support internal financial reporting processes, including forecasting.
- Prepare RAMS for site surveys and participate in site visits as required.
- Own updating project plans and managing document control using SharePoint.
- Plan and deliver project milestones and deliverables.
- Raise orders for supply chain partners’ technical support.
What We Will Be Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Experience in design management and project management.
- Holder of a relevant professional qualification (IENG or CEng) or close to obtaining one.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to report to senior level.
- Proven track record of leading design projects from inception to completion.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work under pressure.
