We are seeking a Principal engineer with a strong background in design management and project management to lead sustainable transport and public realm improvement projects from inception to completion, primarily in London.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Management: Oversee the design process, ensuring all work meets the highest standards and client requirements. Manage the design team, coordinate with other departments, and ensure timely, on‑budget delivery.
  • Project Management: Plan, schedule, budget, and allocate resources for the overall project. Ensure milestones are met and the project is completed on time and within budget.
  • Client Liaison: Act as the main point of contact for clients, keeping them informed of progress throughout the project.
  • Risk Management: Identify and manage project risks, resolving issues quickly and effectively.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure all design work meets the highest quality standards and resolve any issues promptly.
  • Team Leadership: Lead and motivate the design team, ensuring effective and efficient collaboration.

Typical Week Includes

  • Prepare highways designs for construction projects and coordinate input from other disciplines.
  • Develop drawings, design details, specifications, BoQ, and design calculations.
  • Attend client and internal progress meetings and maintain action trackers.
  • Liaise with discipline leads, preparing updates to programme schedules and ensuring inter‑dependencies are managed.
  • Implement QA/QM procedures, assist with Project Execution Plans, and carry out resulting actions.
  • Maintain project commercial risk registers and support preparation of design H&S risk plans and schedules.
  • Coordinate inputs from technical disciplines and disseminate project information across teams.
  • Coordinate technical decision logs.
  • Oversee preparation of fee proposals and change control documents.
  • Compile task assignment documents and arrange internal approvals.
  • Support internal financial reporting processes, including forecasting.
  • Prepare RAMS for site surveys and participate in site visits as required.
  • Own updating project plans and managing document control using SharePoint.
  • Plan and deliver project milestones and deliverables.
  • Raise orders for supply chain partners’ technical support.

What We Will Be Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in design management and project management.
  • Holder of a relevant professional qualification (IENG or CEng) or close to obtaining one.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to report to senior level.
  • Proven track record of leading design projects from inception to completion.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work under pressure.
