Due to our continued expansion into the Nuclear sector, WSP is currently recruiting for a Lead Consultant – Nuclear Safety Engineer with a background in the Nuclear Industry.

About The successful candidate will be placed within our Systems Engineering, Integration and Assurance team, and will work in close collaboration with our Nuclear Business.

A Little More About Your Role… As a recognised and well‑connected expert in delivering system safety to the Nuclear industry, you will be leading and providing innovative solutions to our Clients through the generation of safety services, e.g. planning, safety engineering and risk analysis assessments across the project lifecycle (design, construction, testing, operation, decommissioning). With a pragmatic systems thinking approach and a desire to strive for the highest quality standards, you will enjoy working with safety critical systems in an intensely regulated safety environment and will have demonstrated capability in the provision of licensing support and production of Nuclear Safety Cases in support of safety certifications.

As a lead Nuclear safety specialist, you will be expected to liaise with system developers, systems engineers, testers, equipment operators, facility managers, third‑parties and certification and regulatory bodies (e.g. inspectors) and be able to communicate across all levels of the sector. You will also have gained a track record of developing business opportunities in the Nuclear sector and be strongly aware of the competing needs and constraints on capabilities, availabilities of resources, time and cost.

Through practical experience, you will have gained a deep knowledge of the Nuclear regulatory environment, its legislation e.g. (NIA), and licensing, including the role and operation of the ONR and its application of SAPs/TAGs in reference to UK nuclear safety and security, as well as being familiar with the activities performed by organisations such as the IAEA, environment agency (EA) and others responsible for safety in the nuclear sector.

As a team player and keen to build strong working relationships, you will also be part of a wider team helping to solve complex safety and systems integration problems for our clients on major infrastructure programmes in Industries such as rail, transportation. As well as a willingness and openness to provide expert advice to our clients and your colleagues, you will also have a commitment to mentor Early Career Professionals and develop teams accordingly.

What We Are Looking For You To Demonstrate…

  • A degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Chartered status with a relevant professional body.
  • Significant post‑degree experience in delivering systems safety and systems integration in the Nuclear Industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in nuclear installation safety and security legislation.
  • Significant business development experience in the Nuclear sector.
  • Experience in the creation and coordination of Systems Engineering and Safety Assurance artefacts such as architectures (functional and system), requirements, verification and validation documents, compliance statements, integrated schedules, design risk assessments (safety and CDM) and FMEA, HAZOP, ALARP assessments.
  • Experience in Systems Engineering across various stages of a project lifecycle.
  • A background in client‑facing roles, and/or experience in stakeholder engagement.
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Innovative ideas for the development of systems engineering services.
  • Can achieve a national security clearance equivalent to a BPSS standard, or higher, within a reasonable period.
